When other jurisdictions are in need of help and Alberta is able to assist, our resource-sharing agreements mean firefighters can answer the call quickly. Last year we sent firefighters and support staff to Australia, NWT, Quebec, Manitoba and Oregon.
One of the reasons wildfire numbers were low in 2020 was the amount of rain received across the province. Above-average precipitation often means below-average area burned by wildfire.

This was a year when many of us learned how to adapt during a global pandemic. Thank you to all staff who protected the health and safety of their colleagues and their families by respecting COVID-19 guidelines.
In total this year, 88% of wildfires in Alberta were human-caused. Human-caused wildfires are preventable. This year, fines for breaking wildfire prevention laws were doubled, and we gave out 225 warning tickets and 64 violation tickets for infractions including unsafe fires and tickets related to a fire ban, restriction or forest closure. . From our family to yours, we’d like to wish you a safe and happy holiday season! #ABWildfire
