Terry's grade 12 Port Coquitlam high school basketball team photo, year 1976. He would share male athlete of the year with Doug Alward. Doug is missing from thi...s team photo as his focus is now on running where he would place 2nd overall in the provincial cross country championships. Terri Fleming, coach (first on the left) would play a pivotal role in Terry's life in less than a year. **This November, post a picture of you beside a Terry Landmark (school, park, street sign, trail, mountain) and tag us at @terryfoxcentre and you will be entered to win a copy of Forever Terry: A Legacy in Letters We will randomly choose a winner at the end of the month! ** #terryfoxrun2020 #terryfoxrun #terryfox #marathonofhope #marathon #terryfoxcentre

Adapting to the Dark The Rockwood Warriors are off the trails officially for 2020. The Saint John Trail Runners have their headlamps on. Daryl Steeves is inspiring his runners at the fieldhouse again. The Saint John Track and Field Club starts their indoor program the first week of November. It can definitely be tough to exercise outside with the limited sunshine. Many people are still avoiding gathering inside as well so this could be a tough winter for gyms. Are you ready f...or the shorter hours of daylight and the colder temperatures? An extra layer, gloves and reflective are now a must of course. Beyond the gear and the change in locations though is the change in your approach. Marathoners are usually great role models for this. Especially with the Boston Marathon in April, you have to emotionally commit to building a strong foundation of running through the fall and winter. Most long distance runners have done some reading to prepare for a cold weather program. Training books can help you plan your weekly routines but a great author can also inspire a different outlook on how to approach this time period. I personally love a group goal and famous coach Jeff Galloway outlined a neat approach to properly developing a determined group dynamic in his Marathon! book. Before starting a common goal, runners are brought together in a room for a frank conversation. The participants drive the dialogue and potential obstacles are brought to the forefront. I suspect this inspires a more honest commitment than just agreeing to a training schedule handed out by a coach. Crucial to a successful program for Coach Galloway was a series of personal beliefs that surround and support your behavioural goal. An example would be the belief that you can commit to four to six months of a regular exercise program. The follow-up would be the over-riding beliefs that would be crucial to everyone. His three crucial group beliefs were (1) three times a week minimum every week, (2) adapting diet to support exercise, and (3) maintain mental exercises to keep positive. Do you have a favourite running book that you would like to recommend for someone struggling with motivation for this upcoming winter? Be sure to comment and let us all know!
Join me on Strava and get motivated by seeing your friend's workouts:) You can also track your shoes and the mileage on each. Coach Coffin has a few models in play including: https://www.alexcoffin.com//skechers-mens-go-run-ride-8-hy

Great run at Dutch Point tonight!!
The best case preparation is that you have your flu shot and you take precautions to avoid the flu or covid virus. It has been proven that the covid virus can be fatal to people who would not seem otherwise vulnerable so you should not think that you are immune. The Washington Post profiled young victims early in the case surge and many had no or few risk factors. The best case scenario is that you do not contract a virus. In the worst case scenario, exercise can prepare you... better for many health challenges but it may be the mental toughness that helps the most. if you suspect you may have contracted a virus, this is not the time to keep it going. Your body might feel ready for this challenge but that work has been done. Now is the time for your mental game to begin. For someone used to a physical routine, it can feel tough to allow your body to truly rest but that is what you need to do. Catching a flu virus can feel like a marathon but the finish line is not when you feel better. You might still be contagious and there are long term effects that may be worsened by a premature return to exercise. Even if you were asymptomatic through the whole infection, pushing your aerobic capacity could trigger some of these effects and possibly put you in the sphere of others exercising while you are still contagious. The New York Times has quoted medical opinion to avoid exercise for two weeks after recovery or diagnosis if asymptomatic and then mild exercise to start after the two weeks. Organized fitness events are being canceled again. The Hopewell Rocks 9K was not able to go ahead and the high school cross country championships will not be happening. Nova Scotia was still able to hold the Valley Harvest Marathon and we were able to participate in the KV Marathon recently. There were some absolutely incredible times! Shelley Doucet won the overall title at the KV Marathon. Dennis Mbelenzi almost broke 2:30 at the Valley Harvest. Paula James almost broke 1:20 in the half marathon. Alex Neuffer almost broke 31 minutes in the Valley Harvest 10K. For the rest of us now, our parameters of success should be in regards to either preventing the virus or preventing the spread of the virus. The Moncton and Campbellton areas are virus hotspots at the moment. Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island are presently clear of new cases. Let us be marathon tough and prevent the spread so we can keep our Atlantic bubble.
