This made me long for the days of visiting crowded places. Thought I’d share. What have you not checked off your list?

I remember coming back to school in September 2001. I was nearing 5ft, was excited I weighed more than 40lbs and unbeknownst to me, mom and dad were trying to find us a puppy, Molly. I came downstairs and was upset when morning cartoons were all interrupted by breaking news. A fire or explosion of some kind in NYC. The world around my parents stopped, turn it up they said. We all watched the confusion on our tube until the 2nd plane crashed into the tower right before our ...eyes on live TV. I remember class being solemn and a kid missing, Robert, whose father had been in NYC but later found and not injured. Being a witness to 9/11 and the escalation of violence in the world has informed me more about global politics than had I not. It’s impact could be felt throughout my years studying Political Sciences and History at UBC. I eventually began to meet people who had no living memory of 9/11, and then met others who had neglected their early social studies all the while the Arab Spring was in full swing by 10 year anniversary of 9/11. Even now, stringing together an explanation of this the wholly complicated social, political, religious, tribal, economic, intersectional and international problem is almost impossible, never mind the controversy that comes with whichever answer given. Which sounds eerily similar to the current biological terror we are facing now. So let’s not forget, the world is ever more complicated than we know. Let’s be patient. Let’s be empathetic. Let’s be united, once again. See more
