It has been five years since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission released its final report into the history and legacy of Canada's residential school system. Tonight we reflect on our progress since 2015 and our renewed commitments moving forward. As noted by Universities Canada/Universités Canada, Algoma University understands "the reconciliation journey is far from over."

We are all in this together. We need to take action, stop the spread of COVID-19, and save lives. Please take a moment to watch this important video about close contact and spread from Algoma Public Health. What types of close contact led to people getting COVID-19? Here is a real-world example.... Let's continue to protect ourselves and our community: Stay home if you're sick Keep two metres distance from people you don’t live with Avoid non-essential travel Wash your hands frequently Wear your face covering Remember to practice kindness
Today, we remember those who served and sacrificed for our country. Please take a moment at 11 AM to listen to "The Last Post and Reveille", performed by Jay Dinsdale. We ask that between the two songs, our entire Algoma University Community observe a moment of silence to honour those who serve and have served for our freedom. Elder, Kathleen Eshkibok has shared her words with us in honour of both Aboriginal Veterans Day (Nov. 8) and Remembrance Day (Nov. 11). Miigwech, Kath...leen. Aniin, Boozhoo, My name is Kathleen Eshkibok, and I am Bear Clan from Wiikwemkoong, unceded territory. I serve as an elder at Algoma University and I am an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Today is a special day where we honour our veterans, and I wanted to take this opportunity to honour our Indigenous veterans. Over 1200 Indigenous people volunteered to fight shoulder to shoulder for all Canadians in all three wars. Even though they did not need to volunteer, they volunteered. It is important to remember Indigenous veterans on National Aboriginal Veterans Day (November 8) and also on Remembrance Day (November 11), not only for their contribution to the war but also for the battles they encountered upon their return. In 1995, Indigenous veterans were finally included in the laying of the wreath ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. Many have passed away without ever being recognized. The lives of many veterans ended in despair and poverty. Today we take a moment of silence to remember ALL of the veterans and the sacrifice they made for us. At the going down of the sun And in the morning We will remember them. Today, the Primate and Archbishop of The Anglican Church of Canada, accompanied by distinguished dignitaries, commemorated 30 years of reconciliation work on the Shingwauk Site. Of particular significance was the time spent at the Shingwauk Cemetery, where Survivor and Elder Shirley Horn shared her truth, and the Primate offered prayers for those buried there, and elsewhere, who attended the Shingwauk Indian Residential School. The Primate reiterated the Anglican Church’s Ap...ology for its involvement in the Shingwauk and other Residential Schools. If we don’t know our history, we run the risk of repeating it, shared the Most Reverend Linda Nicholls, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada. Learning how and why our own structures and ways of looking at things had allowed this [Residential Schools] to happen will help us to change."
