DYK - Algoma University had a hockey team? In honour of the NHL regular season starting this week, we thought it would be fitting to share a photo of the 1971 - 1972 Thunderbird Men’s Hockey team. In 1969 when Algoma University College began offering athletics and recreation programming, Ice Hockey was one of the first teams to be formed, and they competed in Sault Ste. Marie’s municipal sports league. ... A familiar face can be found in this photo as well. George Leach (second row, fourth from the right), Algoma University's first Athletics and Recreation Director and namesake of the George Leach Centre on the Sault Ste. Marie campus, was instrumental in creating and developing athletics programming at the University from 1969 until his death in 1986. During that time, Leach served as coach to the Men’s Hockey team.
