Meet the Photographer . . . Val Catellier lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. Photography page and watermark VCatell Photos (feel free to find me and follow ...on FB). Val shoots for two tracks: ALH Motor Speedway, Morden Manitoba Canada and Red River Coop Speedway, Winnipeg Manitoba Canada. Val fell in love with photography as a teenager. Her dad dabbled as a hobby photographer and she guesses she just caught the bug from him. Val has loved dirt track racing longer than she has loved photography. She has always taken pictures throughout her life and the opportunity presented itself to actually shoot the infield in 2015 when she was invited out to ALH by their track photographer . That was literally a dream come true! As with most photographers, Val does spend a lot of time in the infield. Val has a few close calls (wayward cars, flying rocks etc) and there are a few memorable moments that stand out in her memory. The first was from the Wissota Street Stock class when the same driver spun sideways in the same spot two different times and while he was sideways, he looked straight at Val which in turn seemed to make the car aim for her. After the second time in the same season this happened, Val told the driver stop looking at her because she felt like a target lol. The second memorable near miss that stands out was when a young driver (7 or 8 years old) in the Slingshot division lost control and came off the track INTO the infield and came within a foot or so of where a track safety official and Val were standing. As a photographer, or any infield official, you are always cognisant that you have to have eyes in the back of your head, side of your head etc., because at the end of the day you have the best view of the action but if you aren’t paying attention that can come at a cost Val does follow a few photographers. Val follows both of the other local photographers from her area Tim Johnson (Motorsports Addictions), and Kaz Bednarczyk (Kaz Graphics). They support each other and promote each other whenever possible. She also follow Jacy Norgaard from Minneapolis, MN. His work caught her eye and he gets some great shots. Val has never met him personally, but she does admire the work he does. Val is a regular follower of his page. Val says pictures capture amazing moments to try to pick a few favorites or memorable shots is very VERY difficult. Val has done a ‘year in review’ type of photobook for ALH Motor Speedway since 2016. It’s a compilation of action and pit photos from the season. Val thinks as much as she loves chasing that perfect action shot of the racing, she'd have to say the candid pit shots are probably the highlight of what she does. Val loves the support she gets from the drivers, their families and the fans about the pit photos. Val has a unique perspective and am fortunate to be able to capture the memories of what happens on race days outside of the on-track action. Again, it’s really difficult to pick a favorite or most memorable because every time she thinks to herself that’s my favorite. There always seems to be another one and it makes it difficult to choose. Val has two kid's her daughter is 24 year's old and this was her rookie year at ALH Motor Speedway. She shared the car with her boyfriend and they were TrackChampions in the 4 cylinder division for 2019. Val also has a 14 year old son who helps out in the pits with the cars. Val says her kids both share her love of racing and they’ve always grown up knowing mom usually has a camera in her hands. Val says she is not exactly sure they think anything other than this is what mom does when it comes to my track photography. It’s just what they’ve grown up with and it’s our family normal. Val says she is biased when it comes to a racer she follows. Val says her daughter, Jamie Tates, of course is her favorite. Beyond that, she does have a select few that she does love to cheer for but she doesn’t like to play favorites so she's going to keep that to herself lol. Aside from her daughter who she outwardly cheers for (what mom wouldn’t ??) She just aims her camera and focuses on taking the action shots and use her inner cheering voice to root for a few of her favorites. If Val could shoot at any 3 tracks she definitely wouldn’t give up the two she currently shoots at (ALH and RRCS). After that, she has to say either Greenbush Race Park, Greenbush MN; River Cities Speedway, Grand Forks ND; or Buffalo River Race Park, Glyndon MN. All three of these tracks she has been a spectator and they have great race programs. She guesses as a photographer when she sees great racing and a great facility then it just makes her want to go that step further from simply watching the racing to being able to capture the action. If Val could shoot any driver in any league, it’s difficult to pick just one. She thinks rather than a specific driver she would rather have pit access to a large event like the Wissota 100 for example, and then be able to capture the candid moments. Those unexpected, unscripted moments, whether it’s race related or life in general, those are my favorite most treasured moments and to be able to be at a large event to capture those candid fleeting moments would far outweigh following a specific driver in any class or type of racing. Thanks so much Val and we hope in 2020 you will share many of your photos with us.
