Welcome back to "Art Therapy Tuesday - Blue Blob Campaign" -- a social media series brought to you by the CATA-ACAT Advocacy Committee to raise public awareness... and advocate for the profession, and dispel myths about art therapy. ------ "Colouring books -- is that art therapy?" Colouring books on their own are not art therapy, but they can be a structured art activity. Art therapy involves the creative process, and often includes the use of psychotherapy, to facilitate expressions and explorations based on a therapeutic relationship. "Art Therapy Tuesday - Blue Blob Campaign" is a new social media series brought to you by the CATA-ACAT Advocacy Committee to raise public awareness and advocat...e for the profession, and dispel myths about art therapy. ------ "Art what now?" Many people say they’ve never heard of art therapy, but it's been around for many years! Amongst the many early leaders of our field, Margaret Naumburg introduced art as a therapeutic modality at a New York psychiatric hospital in the 1940s. African-American art therapist Dr. Sarah McGee had used creative therapies with the urban poor, migrant farm workers, students, and multicultural groups for survivors of violence since 1949. It is important to recognize that many cultures have been using art-making for healing and wellness for centuries before the term "art therapy" was coined and professionalized in the west. The Euro-American art therapy modality that many of us at CATA-ACAT are trained in and familiar with is one way of using the arts for healing, among many in the world. Many people use art therapy because creating art can be a source of relaxation, a cathartic release, and a pleasant tactile activity that can bring people to the present. Art therapy can be used with different therapeutic modalities by qualified art therapists. I have been suggesting to people to look through things they have at home to use for art. I never thought of trying to do this! So cool.

Is art therapy evidence-based? Yes! Art therapy has been practiced in Canada since the 1940s, since then research has contributed and strengthened our knowledge... and supports its effectiveness with a wide range of issues and age ranges. Art therapy research occurs around the world, but closer to home, the Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA) publishes a research journal. Art therapy masters or masters-level programs, which are a requirement for someone to practice as an art therapist, include research classes as well as a thesis or project. Qualitative and quantitative research results are available for many populations such as children cancer patients adults As well as the American Art Therapy Association’s extensive outcomes bibliography detailing the outcomes of several different populations. If an evidence-based clinical practice is important to you, you can ask your art therapist how they apply research findings and resources about their areas of expertise how they respond to client needs, values, and expectations. As with other modalities of psychotherapy, art therapists work with their clients to develop a treatment plan with measurable goals and objectives and within a certain time frame. If you have any questions, feel free to message this page or contact CATA.

My response art for this week. I had many things to respond to and wasn't sure what I would do until after finishing with a young client yesterday who did an image of themselves sitting and trying to control their emotions during their day. This is the result of my response.
