When is the last time you had your saddle checked? One of the most common cause of back pain in horses is poor saddle fit, and yet we seem to avoid having our saddles checked. ... It is very likely that your horse's shape isn't exactly the same as it was the last time you had your saddle fitted. Time off can cause your horse to lose muscle mass along their topline, it can also cause them to get a bit chunky. Conversely, an increase in exercise can help your horse build up their topline and potentially trim down in other areas. In either scenario, there is a good chance that your horses saddle may not be fitting as well as it should be. A saddle that is too narrow, wide, or a cantle that bounces on your horses thoracic-lumbar region will inevitably cause them pain. Signs of poor saddle fit are: Sensitivity along the spine. Attempt to avoid being saddled. Lumps/Bumps in the saddle region. Sores, bruising, white patches of hair, or dry patches in the saddle region. Reluctance under saddle. Reduced flexibility of the spine. Bucking, rearing, head tossing, and stumbling. Muscle wasting and atrophy. Asymmetry in muscle bulk through fore limb and hind limb muscles. If your horse is presenting some of these symptoms or behaviors, I would highly encourage you to contact your saddle fitter to have your saddle looked at. Your horse would likely benefit from a body work session to help release the muscle tension that resulted from an ill fitting saddle. Contact Samantha to book your horses next bodywork session! 250.202.5661 [email protected]
