What motivates you? What motivated you to become a leader or a business owner? Did you want to achieve something? Or contribute in some way? What about the members of your team?... Do you know what the motivation is behind your 1. Go getter 2. Clock puncher 3. Team player 4. Negative nelly 5. Class clown or Prince(ess) Charming If you did, would it change how you communicate with them? Or how you develop them?
Without the benefit of experience, communication models and frameworks often fall flat. Sharing your experience with your new managers (not just the times you were awesome but the times you really messed up!) supports your role as an expert but it also enables them to skip past making the same mistakes you did!

Do you hire for the "what?" The education, the years in industry, the skill set, the name of the past employer... Or do you hire for the "who"?... The accomplishments, the contributions, interests outside of work, the reason they are interested in working for you... If you are building a team, people selection is more than a list of questions, it is more than an algorithm... It's about values. Yours and the applicants. This is worth reading twice. Slowly even. From one "do-er" to another, sometimes its hard for me to stop and consider not just the accomplishments and the check marks on my to do lists but what am I celebrating? So tell me, what are you CELEBRATING this week?
