October is ADHD awareness month. ADHD is a developmental impairment of the brain’s self-management system - its executive functions. Here are 4 myths along with... facts on ADHD 1. ADHD is a childhood disorder: recent research has shown that many with ADHD function well during childhood and do not manifest any significant symptoms of ADHD until adolescence or later, when greater challenges to executive function are encountered. However, longitudinal studies have also shown that some individuals with ADHD during childhood experience significant reductions in their ADHD impairments as they grow older. 2. People with ADHD just need to try harder: ADHD is a neurological disorder, so that is like telling someone with a headache to stop having a headache, or a person having a stroke to stop having a stroke lol it’s just not possible to control. 3. All people with ADHD should be hyperactive: fun fact, there is no ADD in the DSM-5, it is now just ADHD - inattentive type. There are also ADHD - hyperactive type and ADHD - combined type. Which means that not everyone has to be hyperactive in order to have it 4. Only boys have ADHD: boys ARE more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD, but that’s because girls are largely overlooked and are undiagnosed. Part of the reason is because it can look different in each. It is said that girls are less likely to be hyperactive than boys, which is the most noticeable feature for the disorder. #ADHDAwarenessMonth

Repost from @theanxietymd I've never met anyone who had a significant problem with anxiety (including myself) who didn't adopt a victim mentality, usually beg...inning in childhood. Victim mentality runs rampant in those of us with anxiety and alarm disorder. The more we FEEL like victims, the more helpless we feel. As a result, we feel helpless and powerless and then overestimate threat and underestimate our ability to cope. The ironic part is people with anxiety are often SO MUCH STRONGER than we give ourselves credit for. I made it through medical school to graduate with two academic distinctions and awards and as the president of the graduating class, despite a SEVERE issue with anxiety (especially in the first two years of medical school). This is not to brag (ok, a little) but to show that anxiety lies to us about what we can and cannot do. Once again, when you regulate your nervous system (compassionate self touch ,finding, comforting and reparenting your younger self, breathwork, soothing music, meditation, centering prayer etc etc etc) in your body and you'll see that things come into true perspective so you can truly see the lies that anxiety is telling you. Repost from @jakewhitehealing When our energy is not used for self protection it can then be used for our aliveness and engagement with life. Learning how to ...release the bound energy of trauma allows us to finally release, let go, and rest. This rest is our guard being let down and a re orientation to safety in our nervous system and safety in our environment. This allows for our survival responses to no longer be stuck around events of the past that are triggered in the present. It allows us to be fully here with out having to protect. We are meant to experience overwhelming events, release them through our nervous system, and return to safety and well-being. The result is a sense of empowerment that we made it through and can now be fully. #alive #somaticexperiencingtraumainstitute #somaticexperiencing #release #biology #forgive #behere #positive #faith #heart #letitgo #expand - Register for the 2021 Somatic Experiencing Virtual Conference! https://traumahealing.org/conf1 #SomaticExperiencing #SomaticExperiencingInternational #SomaticExperiencingPractitioner #neurobiology #ptsd #cptsd #conference #research #somatics #somaticpsychology #psychiatry #psychology #resilience #traumahealing #trauma #traumainformed #traumarecovery #healingtrauma #community #connection #iamhere #summit #nervoussytem #neuroscience #neuropsychiatry #mentalhealthprofessionals #somaticexperiencinginternationalmembership

BRAIN FOG ...What the heck is it? Simply put, a lack of energy to the brain cells causing them to slow down. When you experience brain fog, you ca...n't concentrate, recall information (especially from short term memory), or focus for extended periods. It feels like someone pulled an opaque curtain over your brain or turned the fire under a burner on your stove to the lowest simmer setting. It's a common symptom for women just before and during menopause and can also be experienced with autoimmune conditions or in people with severe gut problems. Fueling our brains with purpose lifts the fog. Swipe right to see what you can do to reduce or prevent brain fog. If you're struggling with brain fog, know that there's hope. See more
