Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Alarm From Kidde is being recalled.
March 13 2016, Spring Ahead Like a Boss! Time to replace all the batteries in your smoke alarms. When replacing batteries, follow the manufacturer's instructions for the correct battery type to use. Push the test button to be sure the new battery is working. Replace any alarm that fails to operate after installing a new battery. Alarms older than 10 years should be replaced. Unlike this lady, you don't have to rely on your neighbours to tell you when the building is on fire. All residential buildings must have smoke alarms by law in Ontario. A fire plan is also a good idea, in case you have to "bounce."
Do those nuisance alarms bother you when you're cooking? A safe and easy solution is to just eat out if your culinary skills are lacking.
It's Fire Prevention Week in Windsor. Do things get scorching hot in your bedroom? You should check your smoke alarms. More than half (55%) of all home fire fatalities occur in the bedroom. More than a third (35%) of the victims were asleep at the time of the fire. Besides having an exit plan in case of fire, it is important to keep exit routes clear of junk. Here's an article about the increasing number of hoarders, due to the aging of Baby Boomers, and the impact that has on fire safety.
Why it's good to have a home fire extinguisher handy. The vapors of acetone nail polish removers are extremely flammable. Static discharge may also ignite acetone vapors.
Dust will accumulate inside your smoke alarm, causing it to give a false alarm. After checking the battery this month, take the top off and vacuum the inside with the drapery-cleaning attachment of your vacuum cleaner. And remember, batteries should be replaced once per year and the detector itself needs replacing every 10 years.
Have you considered how your pets will be evacuated in the event of a fire? What if you are not home? This video from Grady Vet has some excellent tips.
The severity of home fires has changed in recent years. Back in cave man days, the limestone and dirt helped your mammoth coverlet from being burnt up when the pot of marmot grease on the cooking fire exploded while unattended. But nowadays, we are constructing homes with more flammable materials like laminates, and then filling them with more combustible contents, heat producing appliances, and open space than ever before. Please take a look at this list of recalls, to make sure your holiday gifts aren't going to result in a fiery death. http://www.cpsc.gov/en/Recalls/
Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! Sharing this twangy country melody to help you remember not to burn down your house trying to deep fry a frozen turkey. Enjoy a non-lethal dinner everyone.
Are your kids going away to school this fall? Shared student accommodations have a higher incident of fires. Take the time to remind your little genius again about fire safety basics, like don't pull the fire alarm for no reason, and don't smoke in bed drunk. An inspection of the premises might be in order, especially if they are going to be living off-campus.
Recall from Nest, the company who produces smoke and CO alarms that are supposed to be less annoying, ( and therefore less likely to have the battery removed or be otherwise disabled by their owners.) Nest testers have discovered a problem with their Wave feature. This feature allowed you to turn off false alarms by waving your hand and sometimes it was found, the alarm did not activate in the event of a real emergency later. https://nest.com/letter-from-the-ceo/
