"One of our Fall family traditions is playing in the leaves. Every year I document it, and it's a lot of fun to go back and see how much they've grown each year. Do you also have a tradition like that?" - Charlene, Van Veit Creative #RealBusyMom

Our favourite way to ensure apples don't brown is by soaking them in water and lemon juice for 5 minutes before packing them away! I simply take a big bowl, fill it with water, and add 1/2 a lemon juice. I cut up our apples for the week and let them soak! Do you have any other tips for preserving apples? - Melyse, Yes, Mama #RealBusyMom
In the fall, apples are added to almost any salad Melyse makes! They go wonderfully with her Maple Dijon vinaigrette: Mix equal parts maple syrup, olive oil, Dijon mustard and water. Season with salt and pepper, drizzle over any salad and voila! Yes, Mama
The Cortland is an all-purpose apple with a succulent taste! Its pure white flesh keeps its shape when cooked, which explains why the Cortland is a pie lovers’ favourite. It is also perfect for fruit salads since it does not brown when exposed to air. To find out more about apples, visit our apple guide: https://allens.ca/guide-to-apples/
"My eldest daughter loves to help mama make a big batch of applesauce! I put her in charge of putting the diced apples into the pot, and making sure they're all well coated with cinnamon. Do your kids help you cook sometimes?" - Melyse, Yes, Mama #RealBusyMom
Do you think the discovery of this apple was really an accident?Tell us what you think and we will post the answer in the next few days!
The less-than-perfect apples make for the best applesauce! 1. Core, peel and slice them into smaller pieces. 2. Add just enough water to cover the apples barely. 3. Sprinkle with cinnamon and maple syrup.... 4. Bring to a boil and then turn down to simmer for 15-20 minutes. The apples will soften just enough to be smooshed with a fork into a naturally sweetened applesauce! Melyse, Yes, Mama #RealBusyMom
The favourite of many: the Honeycrisp. Here is some information that you may find useful. If you wish to cook with this apple, favour recipes that do not require cooking, such as salads or cocktails. For more information, consult our apple guide: https://allens.ca/guide-to-apples/.
