We wrapped up our 2nd week here at #tclifestylerehab with a cupcake celebration. October 15 marked 5 years since Julia was paralyzed by a spinal cord injury and... we wanted to celebrate all the successes she’s had in these 5 years. Pretty amazing to think about all of her hard work paying off, and even though the gains may seem small or insignificant, they are actually hugely important. It’s going to be a long and difficult journey, not without tears of joy and frustration, perhaps even some yelling, screaming or swearing. We are all working together to keep Julia’s goal of walking alive and moving forward and we really appreciate everyone who took the time to tell her that via video message today. Abigail is the spunkiest redhead. She is always smiling despite the trauma she’s been through in the past few months. She can put a smile on anyone’s face and ...loves using her imagination when playing with her therapists. I took Abigail to Kelowna General Hospital on April 9 because she was having significant paralysis in her legs. She couldn’t stand up or bear weight on her legs. Within twelve hours, she had lost all function of her body and was completely paralyzed. We were flown to BC Children’s on April 10 where she received the diagnosis of acute transverse myelitis of her cervical spine. We have been in Vancouver for the past five months after being transferred to Sunny Hill Health Centre for acute rehabilitation and the team there has been amazing. I think some of the most special moments happen with her physiotherapist, Kat. She has such great energy and just understands Abby. Magic happens when the two of them work together. Her recovery looked bleak and the prognosis wasn’t good at the beginning, but she has come so far. All the factors were stacked against her but she has risen above it all.
