Sheet Metal Fab 101: Laser Cutting Curious about what laser cutting is, or considering it for your next project? Check out post #1 in our Sheet Metal Fab 101 series. What is laser cutting?... Laser cutting is a subtractive manufacturing process that uses a highly amplified and focused beam of light to cut metal and other material. How accurate is laser cutting? Laser cutting is extremely accurate and produces high edge quality on profiles such as curves, splines, and radii, eliminating the need for manual grinding. The shop tolerances we uphold on the laser are +/- .003 for location, and maintaining +/- .003-.005 for hole size. How thick can a laser cut? This depends on the type and size of the laser being used to cut the material, and the material itself. Some precision laser cutting machines can process mild steels up to 1.250 (31.75mm) thick, currently. How to know if laser cutting is right for your project? 1) Your profiles have large radii or complex geometry. 2) You will be processing materials that are 0.125 or thicker. 3) You require high edge quality. It’s great to see companies in the metal industry taking steps towards sustainability not only in increased recycling efforts, but also in the research and development of processes that use renewable resources for the production and processing of metals. We use software in-house that maximizes the use of each sheet of metal, and we keep our off-cuts contaminant-free, for recycling.
