Working on your term paper? A reminder that we've assembled a collection of online resources that might be useful to your research, including the Christian Classics Ethereal Library which has the writings of the church fathers online.
The Allison Library is pleased to announce that we have a trial of ProQuest's "Twentieth Century Religious Thought: Volume I, Christianity." Click the link for more details, including how you can provide valuable feedback on this new resource.
from @puritanjenny --- Dr. Packer was always so happy talking about the Puritans and his rare books. When I would ask him if he was still interested in giving lectures in later months he would say, Yes, if I’m still around! and then give me a knowing look and chuckle at himself. If it weren’t for COVID, Regent would be having one enormous, never-ending party to celebrate his life, but since we can’t do that we’re having an online tribute for him on November 18, 12-1:30pm t...hrough Regent’s YouTube page (for more details, see Regent’s website). While it would have been so nice to be together in person, it does seem a bit fitting that, to remember this amazing individual whose influenced reached around the world, we’re all coming together online at the same time. Hope you’ll join us next Wednesday! #jipacker #regentcollege #thepuritans #specialcollections #rarebooks See more
The Allison Library will be closed November 11 for Remembrance Day.
from @puritanjenny --- A little #mementomori for your #halloween weekend. Swipe to see 1) everyone else having fun on Halloween, versus 2) me on Halloween, actually getting scared by the neighbour’s yard decorations #antiquarianbooks #rarebooks #specialcollections #seventeenthcentury
from @puritanjenny --- At our latest trip to the Packer residence, Mrs. Packer generously gave us Dr. P’s typewriter, an emblem of his very long and very prolific writing ministry. He once reflected, On my eleventh birthday I had dropped broad hints at what I hoped for was a full-size bicycle. On my birthday morning, however, what I found waiting for me was an old typewriter. The gift of the typewriter was almost prophetic. My parents foresaw...that I would have enormous fulfillment out of doing things with a typewriter...It was, in fact, the best present that I ever had as a boy. And it continued with me for seven or eight years before it finally lost its power to function. And I have always had a typewriter and day by day been using it ever since. #jipacker #specialcollections #typewriter #typewritersofinstagram #typewriterquotes
Im a big Tolkien fan (as many Regent folk are), so heres a 1952 recording of J.R.R. reading an excerpt from The Hobbit. I particularly love how he voices Gollum. - Dannaya https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_XhcY5Hg2E&t
Thanks to all of you who have been diligent in returning your library books to the book bin! In fact, some of you went above and beyond and generously handed in your OWN books. If you think you may have given us one of your books, please email us ([email protected]) with the book title and we would be happy to return it to you.
The book return bin is currently full. In order to prevent an unnecessary trip, please hold off on returning your books to the bin until next week. No fines will be incurred.
Hi friends! Just thought Id bless your news feed with this wonderful website of woodcut/engraved illustrations in antiquarian books If you find an especially interesting or funny one, do share in the comments -Jen

Weekly book retrieval service begins July 2 for current students, staff, and faculty. Click the link for more details.
All checked out items have had their due dates extended to July 31, 2020. The library return bin will be reopened on July 6; however, so as not to overwhelm the library return bin, we ask that July 6-12 be reserved so that students and patrons who are leaving Regent and Vancouver can return their books during that period. The rest of our library users may begin returning books July 13. Thank you for your cooperation.
Regent College offers so many interesting concentrations to focus your studies on. The Allison Library is here to help - we have compiled research guides that will give you a good place to embark on further study.
Hi all, Jen here. I recently took a free online course through FutureLearn on the history of the book and it was superb! Lots of fascinating information about the printing, selling, and reading of the Bible and other religious texts in the early modern era. Im not sure about the quality of the other courses as they are offered by different institutions and professors, but if youre looking for something fun and educational to do these days Id recommend taking this course or perusing the others; theres lots!
I learned about visio divina today meditating on an image and being receptive to what God might say through it. If you need a study break, or just want to reflect, check out The Visual Commentary on Scripture website (https://thevcs.org/) which has a variety of curated exhibitions of images and corresponding scripture. - Dannaya

Recent events have highlighted the enduring prevalence of racism and xenophobia in America, Canada, and around the globe. The Allison Library laments the abuse of people who are loved by God and created in his image. We grieve over the deaths of victims of systemic racism and oppression. We repent of the ways we have consciously and unconsciously fostered attitudes that have been hurtful and harmful to peoples of different racial and ethnic backgrounds. One step we can take i...s to grow in our understanding, because understanding builds empathy and the courage to live differently. To this end, the Library has curated a collection of ebooks that explore black theology and the black experience of Christianity, and which inform this heart-breaking cultural moment. In response to mass protests in the USA and elsewhere we have chosen to focus on the experience of black people, but we acknowledge that peoples of other racial and ethnic backgrounds have also been the target of racial injustice. As if IVP wasnt already an awesome publisher, from now until June 12 they are offering each person a free "faithful justice"-themed ebook to help us navigate this cultural moment. In our ongoing effort to assist students while the John Richard Allison Library is closed, the library staff is pleased to offer a weekly scanning service for current students, staff, and faculty beginning on Thursday, June 4, 2020. Well, one thing I (Jen) have been doing with extra time at home is re-discovering novels I loved in highschool and now Ive gotten myself into a pickle by finding super expensive versions that I cannot live without! I was happy to see that yes, there is a set of Jane Austens novels that isnt one giant pink flower (no judgment if thats youre thing; Im just a plain Jane type ) and it is published by OUP and I need it. Also found this beauty: a printed copy of Mary Shelleys Frankenstein manuscript! Apologies in advance if one of your faves is on this site Happy shopping...
Show us whats on your shelves! Todays challenge: Share with us a book, or books, that youve read more than once. Take a picture and share in the comments. Here are some of mine! - Dannaya
Good news - the Logos Remote Seminary Library has been extended from June 1 to July 1, 2020. For more info on the remote seminary library, see here:
Comment is an excellent magazine that often features friends of Regent. Heres a review of Daniel Vacas recent book "Evangelicals Incorporated: Books and the Business of Religion in America." What journals or magazines do you enjoy reading?
Are you missing libraries as much as I am? Of course my favourite library is the one I direct, the Allison Library at Regent! But a close second is the amazing Bodleian Library at Oxford. If youre missing the hushed ambience of good libraries everywhere or need some library motivation to finish that final paper, enjoy the sounds of the Bodleian here!
If youre looking for a fun, educational distraction (or inspo for a future paper, maybe?) check out this blog on early modern female book ownership! It shares short posts including pictures, descriptions, and library locations of books owned by women between 1500-1750, showing us what women read, how they signed their names, and how they presented themselves. Some of our rare books are in here too; if you want to see those, type Regent College in the search bar. Enjoy :) --Jen
Writers block? Information overload? Reading the same sentence over and over? Sometimes a little creative break is just what your brain needs to refocus. I lucked out having these two great colouring books already at home. If you dont have one of your own, check out some free ones from UBC Library here: https://about.library.ubc.ca/colour-our-collections/ -Dannaya
A reminder that the Writing Centre is extending its services until May 15. Visit the link below to schedule an appointment:
Hello, friends! Heres a glimpse into Malcolm Guites library, featuring a glorious eighteenth-century Book of Common Prayer complete with fore-edge painting. If you havent seen this exquisite form of painting before be sure to have a watch, and then when our library opens again ask to see our very own fore-edge painting! A few things I cant condone in this video: the, um, method(?) of book arrangement, and (gasp) a slight against the University of Oxford.
Hey Regent friends! Jen here. Thought Id share a fun online resource with you for a brain break :) Did you know that the National Gallery in London has a great website that lets you look at artwork online? You can even read a description and download a low-res image. My favourite is this depiction of Lady Jane Greys execution. When I saw it for the first time in person last summer it was even better than I thought it would be! I decided I MUST have a large print and had to ...sacrifice my travel pillow and a pair of old shoes to fit it in my suitcase (totally worth it). I sometimes wonder if people think its an odd thing to see in our living room but I personally feel encouraged when I look at it, maybe because I remember what LJG wrote to her sister in her final letter: "trust not that the tenderness of your age shall lengthen your life: for unto God, when he calleth, all hours, times and seasons are alike...My good sister, once more again let me entreat thee to learn to die...desire with St. Paul to be dissolved and to be with Christ, with whom, even in death there is life." Of course, a tragic story, but also a story of courage. Would love to see your favourite in the comments below if you have one... See more

Hi friends! Your technical services coordinator here. When you search for books on our library website, Im the one that makes sure you can find them. I started working at Regent a mere two weeks before we began working from home, so you may not recognize me yet. With this extra time at home Im reading up on all things cataloguing, which, lucky for me is both work and fun! What are some fun things youve been reading about? - Dannaya
