This Sunday, December 6 th , it will be 31 years since the Montreal Massacre, where 16 female Engineering Students futures were cut short in one of Canada’s only school shootings. This was an act of Femicide, the targeted killing of female bodies, which continues today in Canada and around the world. The families of these 16 women have asked us to honor their memory by looking to the future, a future where women and girls can live without fear. To do this, we need to step out...side of our comfort zone to learn and grow so we do not allow the mistakes of the past to be repeated. Here are some small things you can do to create big change in our community. Talk to the young people in your life about health relationships, mental health, and addiction. Listen without judgement to lives of your friends and family members. Educate yourself on the signs of domestic violence and human traffic. Seek support if you are experiencing intimate partner violence or other forms of violence. You are not alone. Together we can honor the lives lost to violence by creating a safer future for all. *My Sister’s Place, Alliston’s Women and Children Shelter, has a 24 hour crisis line (705-435-3835) as well as Outreach Legal and Housing supports. Please visit our website at www.mysistersplace.ca for more information. See more

"Audrey Hopkinson would have turned 34 today, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It's also the day the Ontario Association of Interval and Transition Houses publishes its annual femicide list. This year, Hopkinson's name will be on that list. "

My Sister's Place (Alliston) 17.08.2020

Truth be told, when we are talking about violence against women we are most often talking about men. Last year in Ontario, 89% of women and children on OAITH's femicide list were killed by men known to them, including partners, former partners, fathers, brothers, sons, grandsons, friends, and uncles. Our shelters play a vital role for survivors of violence, and give women who need it a place... where they can turn. Despite this, most shelters in Ontario can’t cover their basic operating costs without fundraising. Text COURAGE to 41010 to donate $5-$25 and help ensure women will have a place to turn when they face violence. See more
