Alliston Out Of The Cold 10.04.2020

Our Emergency Overnight Shelter Program is at-risk! If we are unable to open, there is no other emergency shelter program in all South Simcoe to fill our absence. The next closest shelters are in Barrie and Newmarket, where individuals from our community are not prioritized. As the only emergency shelter serving the area, Alliston Out of the Cold saw a 37% increase in users of our program from season 2 to season 3. The numbers of those in need of service is predicted to ris...e because of the impact of COVID19 on mental/physical health and the economic repercussions of the shutdown and changes to people’s income or access to money. With reduction in the capacity of shelters everywhere due to COVID19, the county-wide shelter system knows that there will be many service seekers turned away from accessing services, due to lack of beds. This may very well be the year we see deaths due to exposure like never before. #aotc #makeadifference #community #newtecumseth See more

Oct 10th represents #WorldHomelessDay, a day dedicated to focusing on the homeless needs in our community and providing the community with an opportunity to get involved. We’ve been suggesting ways to help support the homeless situation in New Tecumseth thru Alliston Out of the Cold these past few days and today, we make our final suggestion. It can seem like the hardest one to ask for but it is the most crucial and necessary in order for the shelter to continue its outreac...h program, its overnight shelter and its community dinner. #1 Make a cash donation! No amount is too small. Your generosity is felt every time we help someone in our community. Please consider donating today. Please like and share this post. With our thanks. Happy Thanksgiving! #aotc #makeadifference #community #worldhomelessday #newtecumseth https://www.allistonoutofthecold.com/donate

Alliston Out Of The Cold 23.03.2020

Happy Friday all! Here is another suggestion on how to support Alliston Out of the Cold... #2 Get ready for Coldest Night of the Year Walk 2021. Last year we ran an incredibly successful 5km walk. More than 100 people walked thru the streets, raising over $50,000 for Alliston Out of the Cold. This year the walk may look a little different but these funds have never been more necessary to the shelter. Start planning your team & fundraising goals. Keep your eye on our page... for more details about registration. #aotc #worldhomelessday #makeadifference #community #cnoy20 #newtecumseth https://cnoy.org/home

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not. Dr. Seuss #3 Volunteer. You are so necessary to the success of what we do. We literally could not provide the outreach and shelter resources without your hands on support. Alliston Out Of The Cold 29.02.2020

The purpose of #WorldHomelessDay on Oct 10th is to draw attention to homeless people’s needs locally and provide opportunities for the community to get involved. With that said, here is another way to help and support Alliston Out Of The Cold. #4 Donate to the Foodbank. We don't have a lot of storage at our facility (a new larger building is something we aspire to) but the Foodbank supplies us with food to help support our clients needs. We can take what we need, when we ne...ed it, ensuring there is no waste. Thank you to everyone who supports the Foodbank! We appreciate you. #newtecumseth #community #makeadifference #aotc #donate

Alliston Out Of The Cold 25.02.2020

As we lead up to October 10th and #WorldHomelessDay we wanted to share with our community what you can do to help support Alliston Out of the Cold. We are so lucky to live in a community where one of the most frequent questions we get is, "How can I help?". Over the next few days we will be sharing small, easy actionable items you can do (or might already be doing) to help. #5... Donate your clothing items to The Clothes Line in Alliston. They are currently accepting donations by appointment only. 705-434-0790 Did you know that The Clothes Line supports Alliston Out of the Cold by providing tickets we can offer to our clients. Alliston Out of the Cold runs an outreach program where this resource can be accessed. This allows our clients to shop for what they need (and prefer) with dignity. #WorldHomelessDay #community #newtecumseth #aotc #makeadifference

Hello! My name is Alicia and I’ve recently joined the AOTC board. I will be helping with the fund raising efforts that are so vital and necessary to keeping this important resource open. Especially due to COVID I’ve never felt more connected to my community & neighbors. ... Do you feel the same? I volunteered last year at the shelter with my two kids in tow. It felt good and necessary to give back in this small way. What I’ve learned since joining Alliston Out of the Cold is that they need volunteers! We can’t do what we do, without YOU! As one of the primary support networks for homelessness in New Tecumseth (and surrounding areas) we have both an outreach program and overnight emergency shelter program that could benefit from a few hours of your time, at least once a month. We have various roles to fill and we are confident we can find something that suits your comfort level these days. All our volunteer roles will follow the safe mandates of COVID-19 and AOTC will ensure all health protocols are in place to keep everyone safe. Have time to give? We love you already! Interested to know more? Please contact [email protected] or head to our website and complete the volunteer application at https://allistonoutofthecold.com/volunteer/ Don’t have time? (Hey, we get it. Life is crazy!) Can I ask this favour instead? Like & Share this post.

Last week the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness (CAEH) launched a report, Recovery for All: Proposals to Strengthen the National Housing Strategy and End Homelessness. The report concluded that the Recovery for All plan can end homelessness in Canada by 2030 while saving Canadians $18 billion -- all while creating thousands of jobs! If this pandemic has taught us anything it’s that we can end #homelessness in Canada if we choose to. Hello Amazing Supporters. Thank you so very much for your donations of t-shirts and underwear to the shelter. It was very needed and greatly appreciated. Our community is amazing! As we continue to operate under a new model during the province wide COVID-19 state of emergency, more and more needs are arising for our operations. ... Today we are asking for support in the form of Grocery Gift Card Donations. We are continuing to support our vulnerable members of the community 24/7 and even with our current meal donations there is still a need to pick up food items for our guests. At this time we are asking for Donations of Gift Cards to the grocery stores on the west end of Alliston : Zhers, Freshco and Giant Tiger as well as Gift Cards for Costco. Alliston Out Of The Cold 15.11.2019

In light of the ever evolving flow of information and what is available to us to assist in making things happen, we are making every effort to remain open!! Starting April 1 we will be moving to a 24/7 shelter, for those that are currently accessing our services. In line with COVID19 recommendations and in an effort to manage the risk of exposure for our guests and staff/volunteers, unfortunately, we are unable to take any new or returning guests at this time. Drob-by ...hours are scheduled daily 12 (noon) until 2pm for anyone in the community presently living rough or in other precarious living situations, for pariticipants to gather supplies, food and other necessities (as long as we have the supply/stock to provide). Our manpower has dwindled significantly, making scheduling and coverage a challenge - so we will remain open and operating in this way for as long as we are able. Should things change we are prepared to look at alternate options for service to help support those that are experiencing homelessness in New Tecumseth and the surrounding areas. Support from the community is appreciated at this time. Anyone wishing to support the program can contribute via PayPal or e-transfer. Check out our website for more information on how to donate. As always, physical donations of goods, food or other items, will not be accepted at the door without prior arrangement and approval. Thank you for your support in this incredibly difficult time! We have a really great community of supporters and helpers and we are blown away by the love this community has shown for one of our more vulnerable populations!

Alliston Out Of The Cold 03.11.2019

To do our part in flattening the curve and to keep our volunteers and guests safe, Alliston Out of the Cold has cancelled the Community Dinners for the foreseeable future. Our Emergency Overnight Shelter remains open for the time being; however we are restricting our services to only those who are already utilizing our emergency overnight shelter program, as well as those who are living rough and have nowhere to go. Those who are currently housed, staying in other shelters.../lodging and/or who have some type of accommodations will not be able to access AOTC due to the public health crisis. Thank you to our incredible staff and volunteers who are helping us to continue services at this time. We have a goal of remaining open until the end of the month. As the situation is ever evolving, however, we will assess our shelter operations weekly and update as/when things change.

Alliston Out Of The Cold 20.10.2019

Rural homelessness can look so different than the stereotypical homelessness we are used to seeing. Hidden homelessness is exceptionally more difficult to address, because a good majority of the battle is convincing people that it’s happening.

This story is all too real for the people who are accessing our shelter. Our guests share similar stories to those depicted in this piece - one major difference is that homelessness in New Tecumseth and the surrounding areas isn’t as ‘visible’. Hidden homelessness - meaning you can’t ‘see’ it (as much) - is couch surfing, living in cars, accessing emergency shelters or temporary accommodations, living rough (in tents, etc.), and sleeping in nooks and crannies where and when...ever they can. Did you know that the average wait to obtain subsidized housing in South Simcoe can be anywhere between 6 to 11 years?! The definition of affordable housing is that a household spends no more than 30% of their monthly income on housing expenses. Did you know that nearly half (that’s almost FIFTY per cent) of South Simcoe residents are spending over 30% of their monthly income on housing costs?! Canadians spending 50% or more of their monthly income on housing expenses are at increased risk of homelessness. Here in New Tecumseth we are experiencing an alarming increase in individuals seeking assistance. Our rents are sky rocketing and affordable housing is next to non-existent. Something has to be done. #aotc #makeadifference #endhomelessness

A BIG Thank You to Jessie Cloutier!! This local youth chose to make AOTC the benefactor of the funds she raised as a part of her Social Justice action project for her Equity class. On Dec. 7, Jessie rented a booth at the first ever Banting Marketplace and teamed up with incredible organizations to sell their goods and promote ethical consumerism. She used some of the money raised to purchase needed items for AOTC and donated the remaining $500 to general operations of AOTC... programming. #aotc #makeadifference #youthempowerment #incredibleyouth #bethechange
