When you encounter something that makes you uncomfortable or someone calls you out: Don't dismiss it or move into denying and deflecting, getting defensive and perhaps even lashing back out in retaliation. Sit with the discomfort. Welcome the information as an opportunity to learn and grow and do better.... Listen, apologize, and change your behaviour going forward. We all make mistakes. I dare say, stop asking for references at all but then some of you would think that blasphemous. Listen... our last (or current) employer is likely a bully, a racist, a sexist, a homophobic, perhaps one who created a hostile or toxic work environment.
