Do you know what to do if you encounter a bear? When bears are caught off guard, they usually just want to flee. If you do see a bear, here’s what you should d...o: Slowly back away while keeping the bear in sight and wait for it to leave. Don’t run or climb a tree they are fast climbers! If the bear does not leave, throw objects, wave your arms and make noise with a whistle or air horn. Prepare to use bear spray. If you are near a building or vehicle get inside as a precaution. Drop any food you may be carrying and slowly move away. If a bear is in a tree, leave it alone. Leave the area. The bear will come down when it feels safe. Be #Bearwise. Visit Ontario.ca/Bearwise for more information.

Turtle Times! Since we are now in peak turtle season, Wendy would like to remind everyone how to safely help a Snapping turtle cross the road. We would also lov...e to hear of any conservation actions involving Ontario's turtles that you have been a part of! https://ontarioturtle.ca//report-your-conservation-actions/ These actions may include: - Helping a turtle cross the road - Using a nest protector on your property - Being involved in a project for ecopassages or turtle crossing signs - Attending one of our education events - Teaching friends and family how to assist a turtle across the road By taking a minute to fill out this quick survey, you can help us understand more about the conservation of turtles in Ontario. Thank you for everything you do! TD Friends of the Environment Foundation
Most Snapping turtles in Ontario cannot take off fingers and toes; their jaw strength is much less than a human’s and so they would have a hard time breaking a ...big carrot in half. While they can give you a welt, they only snap in defence and on land when they feel threatened. They rarely, if ever, snap under water. Moving a snapper from their territory causes harm and may be fatal to these amazing helpers who keep our lakes clean. You can safely swim with them. People have been doing that for generations! Harming a snapper turtle is illegal and a finable offence under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. Here’s the science on it: https://www.turtleguardians.com///12/Mr.-Misunderstood.pdf (And let’s be really clear - we are talking about reasonably grown humans fingers and not toddlers who should not be left unattended in any scenario). We think this topic is really important so we will look to show you the truth through respectful and lawful experiments. Stay tuned. For now if you’re curious about snappers gIve us a call at the Turtle Guardians Headquarters at 705-457-1222 See more

Protect yourself and your community! If you head outdoors, remember to do the following: Check for #local restrictions on outdoor areas Practice physical d...istancing - stay 2 metres from other people Do not gather in groups while fishing, hunting, and hiking. We want to remind you that: At this time fishing and hunting remain open in Ontario. All rules and regulations are in effect. Conservation Officers continue to patrol and protect our natural resources during the COVID-19 epidemic. We are looking into the issue of licences that were purchased but can’t be used due to local restrictions. We will have more information about this soon. Stay tuned! We will provide frequent updates right here and will be sharing the same messages on www.facebook.com/ONresources. You can also visit Ontario.ca/hunting and Ontario.ca/fishing for up-to-date information. Thank you everyone. Stay safe. #COVID19
