Last night a female Ottawa Realtor shared how she had a request to show a vacant/unoccupied property at night to a male homebuyer. She asked for a piece of ID ...to be provided before she would book the showing. He declined, he had never had to do this before and he decided he didn’t want to, so she didn’t show him the property. We won’t know if this buyer was dangerous or just thrown off by the request. But I applaud this Realtor for putting her safety first. I don’t know many female realtors who haven’t been uneasy during a showing. We all have precautions in place. Sometimes we will even have someone come along for the showing, just in case. My goal of this post is to normalize this request and let everyone know that this is normal. We don’t ask for your ID as a means to solicit you as a client, to bombard you with emails and marketing. We do this for our safety. A lot of people might not really think about the safety risks of our job as Realtors, especially female realtors. Think about it: we meet complete strangers in empty houses, often at night, sometimes in rural locations, totally alone. We are prime candidates for assault, abduction and much worse. We do our best to mitigate the risks when meeting new clients: ask for ID, show the house in a specific way so as to never have the client between ourselves and the door, keep track of all exits in the home, look around for neighbours, park on the street so we don’t get blocked in the driveway, have loud noise making devices on hand...the list goes on. I did a quick google search on attacks on Realtors. It was not challenging to find a list of headlines for this post. The market is crazy and stressful enough as it is right now. Working for Buyers in a Sellers market is challenging. Please consider our safety concerns when we ask for ID prior to a showing, before entering an Open House (whenever they resume)...our intentions are genuinely about our safety. We want to show you a home and be able to return to ours afterwards. Please share and let others know: if you don’t know the realtor you are calling to view a home, you might be asked for ID, provide it, our intentions are good. We are trying our best to stay safe.
