Simone Biles is already a legend at the age of 24. The American woman officially became the best gymnast the sport has ever seen - better than any man or woman in history - when in 2019 she became the world’s most decorated gymnast of all time. She simply blew away the competition. During a now legendary floor routine in August 2019 she cleanly landed what she is referred to as the hardest move in the world: A triple-double, which is two flips with three twists. It is a mo...ve that is generally considered not humanly possible, even by some of the world’s best (male) gymnasts. Simone's overall medal haul is unprecedented. Dolores Clara Fernandez Huerta is one of the most influential labor activists of the 20th century and a leader of the Chicano civil rights movement. Huerta began her career as an activist when she co-founded the Stockton chapter of the Community Service Organization (CSO), which led voter registration drives and fought for economic improvements for Hispanics. She later founded the Agricultural Workers Association and through a CSO associate, Huerta met activist César Chávez... with whom she founded the National Farm Workers Association which eventually became the United Farm Workers’ Union. Huerta served as UFW vice president until 1999. Throughout her work with the UFW, Huerta organized workers, negotiated contracts, advocated for safer working conditions including the elimination of harmful pesticides. She fought for unemployment and healthcare benefits for agricultural workers and was the driving force behind the nationwide consumer boycott of grapes that resulted in the ground-breaking California Agricultural Labor Relations Act of 1975. Yoko Ono is a Japanese artist and musician who was an influential practitioner of feminist conceptual and performance art in the 1960s, as well as an experimental musician. She famously met and wed John Lennon, and is often robbed of her identity as a female artist and regarded only as John Lennon’s widow, as well as the woman who broke up The Beatles. In fact, one of Ono’s most important feminist works is her performance art entitled Cut Piece, an extraordinarily influential... work that is considered a landmark of feminist performance art. In the piece Ono kneels on a stage dressed in a simple black dress. She places a pair of scissors in front of her and invites audience members, both male and female, to come to the stage to cut off a part of her garment. As is evident by the recordings of the 6 performances, the audience becomes increasingly daring, with one of the final male participants even cutting Ono’s bra straps during her performance at Carnegie Hall. The work has been interpreted in a variety of ways, as an exploration of power dynamics, gender issues, violence and victimization, and cultural identity or otherness, all of which are feminist issues that remain relevant today. #womenshistorymonth #alphawoman
