Today, Red Deer Public Schools remembers the lost children, survivors and families impacted by residential schools. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation will give time and space to reflect and learn more about the history and ongoing legacy of residential schools. All 11,000 students and 1,500 staff in Red Deer Public Schools commemorated the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by watching a Division-wide video and participated in activities, lessons and projects related to truth and reconciliation. Red Deer Public Schools is preparing for a safe and successful school year ahead. Today, the Board of Trustees approved the Division’s COVID-19 Re-Entry, Recovery and Resurgence Plan. Red Deer Public will follow Alberta Education guidelines when it comes to masking, which means masks are recommended in school and classroom settings, but are not mandatory. Recognizing Remembrance Day in our schools and remembering those who fought and continue to fight for our freedom is extremely important to students and staff in Red Deer Public Schools - in fact, it’s one of the biggest ceremonies on our school calendar each year. With COVID-19, schools are not able to host their traditional Remembrance Day ceremonies given the limits on assemblies in schools. There is much work taking place behind the scenes as Red Deer Public is currently planning for what the 2020/2021 school might look like for our students, families and staff. This morning, Red Deer Public sent a survey to all of our families via email, in which we are looking for feedback and intentions in terms of what the fall could look like for you. The Government of Alberta, Alberta Health Services, and Alberta Education announced today that all K-12 schools in Alberta will be cancelling classes effective immediately and for an indefinite period of time. This change takes place immediately recognizing the priority to protect the health and safety of students and staff. We recognize that parents have many questions regarding who should and should not be coming to school, as per the directive of the Alberta Medical Officer of Health. Prairie Rose School Division No.8 put together a quick reference guide that we wanted to share for both parents and staff to use when determining whether a child (or staff member) should be at school, or stay home under the 14-day recommended self-isolation period.
