UPDATE We hope to reopen our doors as soon as possible, but until Public Health indicates that our community is safe to do so, we will be offering VIDEO-BASED physiotherapy so you can have secure and private one-on-one sessions with a physiotherapist from the safety of your home. Your physiotherapist will assess your pain and help you learn how to care for your condition and how you can use exercise and home remedies to help get you moving faster and better! ... If your exercises are getting too easy, your physiotherapist can progress your exercises to the next level and provide insight so you can continue healing and moving to full recovery from your condition. Most Extended Health Insurance plans are providing coverage for this care. Contact us for an appointment or to have a FREE discussion with a physiotherapist who can answer any questions you might have. You can email us or give us a call/text at (905) 335-6100. We look forward to working with you! See more

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and maximizing social distancing, we will not be opening our clinic doors until further notice. When Public Health restrictions permit, we will re-open to ensure the safety of our clients, staff, and community. We are currently developing tele-rehabilitation options for clients. This will involve either telephone or video calls between the physiotherapist and client in order to perform assessments and follow-up care that can be completed a...t home. It is recognized by many extended health insurance plans. Tele-rehabilitation often includes learning how your day-to-day activities can impact your recovery, any at-home remedies that can help your condition, and an individualized exercise program that is sent to you to help get you moving faster. If you are interested in scheduling a session with your therapist, please feel free to e-mail them and we will let you know when we are available to set up a time to discuss your case with you. If you have an emergency or acute injury, please e-mail one of our physiotherapists and we will phone you to discuss your situation. At Alton Physiotherapy & Sports Clinic, we will continue to do whatever we can to optimally care for your health. At this time, staying closed to support social distancing is one way we can continue to show that we care tremendously about the health of every person in our community. We hope you are all keeping well and we thank you for your support and patience as we navigate this new territory together. Feel free to continue checking our website for any new updates. We hope to open again soon! Let us know if you need anything. We are always happy to help. Sincerely, The Team at Alton Physiotherapy & Sports Clinic

VESTIBULAR REHAB Vestibular rehabilitation therapy is a type of therapy used to treat vertigo/dizziness. The goal of treatment is to minimize dizziness, improve balance, and prevent falls by restoring normal function of the vestibular system. This system exists in our inner ear and connects with the brain to gives us information on our current state of balance and positioning in space. Our therapists have completed specific vestibular rehabilitation courses t...o help determine the cause of your vertigo or dizziness, and how best to treat it. In vestibular rehabilitation, your therapist will assess your condition and design an exercise program to encourage the brain to adapt and learn to tolerate the stimulus causing the dizziness! Treatment typically involves performing individualized exercises to challenge your vision, as well as static and dynamicbalance. In most cases, patients visit the therapist on a limited basis and perform these exercises at home to encourage the most optimal recovery. CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT A concussion is a disruption in neurological functioning after a significant impact to the head or elsewhere on the body. This causes biochemical imbalances in the brain cells, decreased blood flow, and temporary energy deficits within the brain. It results in the rapid onset of short-lived impairment of neurological function that resolves spontaneously. However, in some cases, symptoms may last beyond the typical timeframe. Research shows ...that any activity immediately following a concussion, including both cognitive and physical, can delay healing from a concussion. Hence, complete rest from activity is the best immediate treatment after a concussion - and to get assessed by a trained professional! Our practitioners can help evaluate your concussion symptoms (neck and back pain, headaches, dizziness, etc.). We assess the systems affected by concussion, including your vision and balance, as well as the impact on other parts of your body. We guide you through a treatment plan to allow a gradual return to work, sport, or other activities that are an important part of your normal lifestyle. ACUPUNCTURE Acupuncture is a method of balancing the body’s energy by inserting needles under the skin at specific points along energy pathways (meridians), to prevent or cure disorders in the body. Research indicates that needles inserted at acupuncture points induce biochemical changes and improve circulation throughout the body. This results in pain relief, decreasing muscle tension, reducing inflammation, and speeding up your body’s natural healing proces...ses. Acupuncture is a safe, effective way to enhance conventional medical treatments, including physiotherapy! Have you tried acupuncture?? We all know stretching is important to keep our body in tip top shape while we exercise and enjoy our favourite physical activities. Did you know there are two styles of stretching? STATIC stretching means you are in one stationary position for a prescribed amount of time. DYNAMIC stretching means you are moving while you stretch, taking the joint through its range of motion. An example of static stretching is lying on the floor, crossing one leg over your opposite knee, and pulling your thigh towards your chest (see below). An example of dynamic stretching is swinging your leg front to back while supporting yourself on a stationary object (see below). Which do you believe is the best way to stretch PRE-activity?

As we approach the warmer weather (HOPEFULLY!), most people are getting back to their favourite outdoor activities We weekend warriors can sometimes experience injury while getting back into the swing of things. Here are a few tips to prevent injury so you can return to your sport safely! 1) Remember to ease back in - if you haven't been as active for the winter, pace yourself. Injuries like IT band syndrome and Patellofemoral pain syndrome can occur when we ju...mp in too quickly. 2) Warm ups are important - prepare your muscles for the activity you are asking them to perform! 3) Don't forget a proper cool down after your activity. This is a great time to add in a stretching routine or your home exercise program from your therapist. 4) Try to add variety to your work out routine - doing only sport specific exercise can lead to imbalances. Think of your body as a whole! If you experience any bumps along the way, we're here to help. Book an appointment with one of our therapists today! See more
