Based on information collected from the US & UK, did you know that dementia impacts Black communities at higher rates with some studies showing they are two times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia? This Black History Month, we honour members of Black communities who may be living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. We also honour and celebrate the stories of those we know and those we will never know who are important pieces to the mosaic that... is Canada. To learn more about Black Canadian history, we invite you to view a video series from Unilearnal entitled 28 Moments of Black Canadian History. Here is the introductory video link: https://youtu.be/b5n-4XSpl60. #ckont #blackhistorymonth

People with dementia are four to five times more likely to fall than older people who do not have a cognitive impairment. Here are some easy tips to #preventfalls inside your home when caring for someone with dementia: Make sure the home has enough lighting in each room to reduce visual difficulties. People with dementia might misinterpret what they see, so reducing dark areas and shadows is vital.... As a person living with dementia may have more sensitivity to noise, you should try and decrease the level of white noise and loud sounds around them. If the noise level becomes too much, it can cause anxiety and nervousness which can make a person with dementia unsteady on their feet. What a person wears on their feet can represent a major fall risk. If a shoe can easily slip off, it can cause them to trip. However, a person living with dementia may struggle with complicated articles of clothing that involve buttons or laces. Shoes with Velcro fastenings are a good solution, making footwear easy to take on and off, but also safely securing it to their feet. You can find other tips and resources at https://www.fallpreventionmonth.ca/.

This December 1st marks the 8th annual #GivingTuesdayCA movement! It’s a time when charities, companies and individuals join together and rally for favourite causes. This year has been a challenging time for us all, but we continue to face this challenge head on with kindness and generosity. As the season of giving approaches, please consider supporting one of the many local organizations who give their all to support the C-K community. If you are able to this December, let your first gift be a donation to a local charity!
