I cannot tell you how many times I have been in a meeting with clients and heard, I don’t need insurance Amanda. It is a waste of money. My response is simple. Actually, it is one of the smartest investments in yourself and your business that you can make. People tend to assume that nothing bad will ever happen to them. Or, that health problems are a thing you only need to be worried about in the VERY FAR future. Unfortunately that is not always the case.... In today’s blog post, I share about how a serious health event that occurred to my dear friend a couple of weeks ago was a good reminder of the value of insurance Link in my bio for the full blog post . . . . . #blog #bloggerlife #bloggerlifestyle #bloggerlove #bloggers #bloggersgetsocial #bloggerslife #bloggersofinstagram #bloggerstyle #blogging #bloglife #blogpost #blogs #global #instablogger #know #portal #read #reading #share #this #week #world

I visit @citizencafebakery (a local coffee shop) on a VERY REGULAR basis. In fact, I just popped in this morning on my way to work. It happens to be right next door to my favorite pilates studio and just down the street from my office.... And their coffee is the best - beans imported from the Yukon (yum!) One day, I was reading my book and drinking my coffee when I heard a child at the nearby table say, Look at the coo-coo clock mom!! My initial thought was, there’s no coo-coo clock here! But sure enough, just as I had that thought, I heard the familiar sound of the clock going off on the hour. Turns out it had been there all along - I just hadn’t seen it. I just needed a fresh perspective to point it out to me. I realized the other day that I try to be like that child when helping my clients through their business hurdles - sometimes you just need someone to come in and give you a new perspective! Have you ever had an experience where you did not see something that was right in front of you? #perspective #business #plan #yxe #supportsmallbusiness

TAX TRIVIA TUESDAY!!! While cryptocurrency has the word currency in its name, Canada doesn’t recognize it as a currency. Only the Canadian dollar is recognized as official currency in Canada. Digital currency is categorized as a commodity - you must report gains and losses from the sale of cryptocurrency. Goods purchased using digital currency must be included in income, and GST/HST is applicable.... #thetaxchick #tuesdayfun #trivia #tax #money #lawyer #themoreyouknow

Tax Trivia Tuesday!! Arizona levies tax on bulk purchase of ice (i.e. ice block). But surprisingly, on the other hand, purchasing ice-cubes is totally exempt from tax. So, if you visit Arizona in the future, make sure you opt for ice-cubes to save money. ... . . . . . #business #businessowner #entrepreneur #finance #financialfreedom #incometax #irs #love #smallbusiness #tax #taxtime .

Do you have a Will? When was the last time you dusted it off? Do you know what your income tax liability will be on death? If so, do you know how you will pay it?... Estate planning is about more than just drafting a quick Will - it does not have to be complicated, but if you fail to plan, you can leave a huge mess for everyone to clean up after your death. If you are curious to learn more, check out the latest episode of The Tax Chick Podcast - I have a candid conversation with my special guest, Christine, on these topics and more! A few days ago I was meeting with estate planning clients and I asked them about what insurance they currently had in place. They looked at each other and then back at me and said, Well, we have some life insurance but then there is this investment portion? If this is how you feel about insurance, you are not alone! ... Insurance is an often misunderstood product - but for business owners (in particular) it can be critical to the health of your business. So I decided to grab my friends, Jerry Gedir (Continuity) and Tracy Duff (Skye Planning Group) and have a candid conversation on life insurance, disability insurance and critical illness insurance. This is a really great episode for business owners who are curious about how insurance can fit into their plans - and is also a helpful resource for other advisors who are looking to better understand insurance products. TAX TRIVIA IS BACK!!! (By popular demand :) Have you heard about the chopstick tax? In 2006, China introduced a 5% tax on disposable wooden chopsticks in order to protect and preserve the shrinking forests. The authorities believed that this measure would encourage people to eat with reusable, plastic chopsticks instead of traditional ones.... . . . . . #dailyfacts #didyouknow #dyk #facts #knowledgeispower #nowiknow #questionoftheday #questions #quiz #themoreyouknow #til #trivia #triviagame #triviagames #trivialove #triviaquestion #triviaquestions #triviatime #triviatuesday #triviatuesdays #tuesdaytrivia #yxe

Every Saturday night growing up, I would go to church with my parents and then we would come home, eat pizza, and watch Bumper Stumpers. To this day, when I see a novelty license plate, my mind immediately returns to those Saturday nights. Each license plate was an individual puzzle that needed to be solved. ... My dad particularly enjoyed trying to figure it out - he would laugh so hard that he would cry - a trait I have also inherited. Maybe this is where my love of figuring out difficult problems started. A Saturday night with my parents, eating pizza and watching a quiz show. I love to get my hands into a difficult issue and see if I can come up with a creative solution. Often new clients will come in and apologize for the mess they are in. But no apologies are required - I am happy to help and be part of creating the solution. PS - the name The Tax Chick was chosen because of a license plate I saw in Toronto many years ago that read TXCHCK What novelty license plates have you seen recently? . . . . . #entrepreneur #goals #happy #inspiration #instagood #instagram #life #lifestyle #mindset #motivation #motivational #motivationalmonday #motivationmonday #motivations #positivevibes #success #yxebusiness #yqr #yxeliving #lawyerlife

I decided that July would be incorporation month in Tax Chick land :) The issue of when should I incorporate? is one of the most common questions I am asked by business owners. So it seemed only fitting to devote a month to the topic. On this new episode of the Tax Chick Podcast, I am catching up with my old friend Phil - we completed the In-Depth Tax Course together and Phil is always down to geek out about tax topics.... Phil and I discuss: (1) how incorporation should not necessarily be a sign of status; (2) the thresholds we look for prior to suggesting incorporation and (3) the importance of getting your arms around your cash flow and knowing your profit levels. This is a must-listen for business owners! Pair it with the episode I released earlier this month, and a glass of your favorite beverage This episode is available now on all major streaming platforms, or through the link in my bio. What is the biggest fear you had to overcome as a business owner? I can still remember the first time I walked off the elevator during renovations at the office a couple years ago and saw our new feature wall with our firm logo. I had already been a partner for a year or so but something hit me that day. I owned something.... Part of this was mine. For someone who grew up without any entrepreneurs in her immediate family, this was a big deal. I do not talk a lot about my day job on this platform. But during the day, I am a tax lawyer and also a partner in a medium-sized law firm in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Being a business owner is hard. It is full of ups and downs. Please know that when I talk on this platform about resources for your business, or building your team, that I am speaking from personal experience. From one business owner to another, I see you. I hear you. I support you! And high fives to you for everything you do for your staff and for your community each day . . . . . #branding #business #businessowner #businessowners #businesswoman #digitalmarketing #entrepreneur #entrepreneurlife #entrepreneurmindset #entrepreneurs #entrepreneurship #goals #hustle #inspiration #instagood #life #lifestyle #marketing #mindset #motivation #motivationalquotes #newbusinessowner #smallbusiness #smallbusinessowner #smallbusinessowners #startup #success

TAX TRIVIA TUESDAY!!! Apparently, the first electronic transmission of a tax return (e-file) occurred on January 24, 1986. I can’t decide whether we have moved at a snail’s pace or warp speed. It has been 35 years since 1986. In Canada, we are only starting to see the ability to email a CRA officer - in certain cases, we are still relying on the mail service or fax... TAX TRIVIA TUESDAY!! A tariff is a tax imposed by a government of a country on imports or exports of goods. There are a few theories on the origins of the word tariff, but it appears to originate from the Arabic word ta’rif, meaning information, notification, or more literally, a making known. ... #thetaxchick

It is that time of year again... The time of year where we face the music and realize we need to dive into the shoebox/filing cabinet/random pile of paper in the corner of our garage to get ready to file our tax return for the past year. I used to also fall victim to this panic.... However, a couple of years ago, I started two folders: One of the folders is electronic and sits on my laptop. I put any charitable donation receipts or other electronic slips or informational documents in this folder as I receive it (labelled by year). The other folder is a paper folder. It sits in my file cabinet in my spare room. I throw any paper receipts/slips etc in this folder as I receive them. I started this folder system because the older I get, the worse my memory is. I have good intentions of pulling relevant emails at the end of the year or going through a cabinet or desk to find documents - but it never happens and the task seems insurmountable. If I file as I go, then I do not have to worry about missing anything. For the month of March, I am going to be tackling some topics relevant to filing your taxes in Canada. In this week’s blog post, I am addressing a common concern I hear from clients - Who do I call at CRA if I have a question?
