February 7th, 2016 To: All-Native Basketball Committee This letter is in response to the All-Native Basketball Tournaments Executive Committee’s decision to exclude, Josiah Wilson, from the 2016 basketball tournament. The committee’s decision does not reflect our values as Indigenous people, but rather reflects an oppressive ideology that has been forced upon us by colonists. For this reasons, the exclusion of Josiah Wilson from the tournament needs to be overturned immediate...Continue reading

An Update for those who have been following Josiah’s story - The All Native Committee has a number of conditions in which they are to follow through on. The timing hasn’t worked out for this years tournament for them to do their public apology. The first attempt in working with our Hereditary Chiefs and Tribal Council were not good enough. Our Leadership has made the decision to post pone this ceremony to the 2019 All Native Tournament next year so that they can be assu...red the apology is genuine and that the additional commitments are followed through with as directed by the Human Rights Tribunal Thank you for all the support and to the Heiltsuk Nation for continuing to stand for what is right! It is also our hope that Josiah is able to comeback next year and play with our Sr. Team See more

Message from Dr. Don Wilson Jr. Josiah's father The All Native Basketball Tournament posted a statement on their page acknowledging that Josiah is allowed to play again next year, and they have reversed their decision regarding the blood quantum rule. 2017 Update After being denied the right to play in the 2016 All Native Basketball Tournament due to having no native blood Josiah Wilson filed a complaint at the Human Rights Tribunal against the All Native Basketball Tournament on May 24, 2016. We argue that Josiah, a Heiltsuk First Nation Member and status Indian who was adopted into the Heiltsuk First Nation by his father Don Wilson as an infant, was discriminated against on the basis of race, ancestry, place of ori...gin, colour, and family status contrary to the BC Human Rights Code, s. 8. In the face of the Human Rights Complaint, the All Native Basketball Tournament has refused to allow Josiah to play in the 2017 tournament taking place this month. Josiah’s complaint is set to go to hearing in Vancouver, March 6-10, 2017. At the hearing, we hope to set a positive precedent that will uplift the role of adoptees in Heiltsuk culture and respect the Heiltsuk’s right to determine themselves without regard to racist blood quantums. We continue to thank our supporters including Heiltsuk Tribal Council and the Heiltsuk Hereditary Chiefs for their support. See more
