SCAM ALERT Amherst Police would like to make the public aware of a scam that has been circulating. Similar scams of this nature have recently been reported to the Amherst Police Department. This scam often involves someone purporting to be a serving member of the military who makes contact with a potential victim and requests money. Usually the excuse is that their bank accounts have been frozen and they are stranded in a foreign country because they and missed their flight... and needed more money for travel. Other similar scams involve the "active service member" requesting the victim to hold a large sum of money for them until they returned to the country. When the money is allegedly "sent" the victim is contacted by a 'courier' company who states that duty/tax/custom fees need to be paid on the package. The sum for these charges is usually hundreds of dollars. Following this, a second request is often made for more money citing more tax or customs fees, the second time, the amounts can be as high as a few thousand dollars. In some of these online scams, the victim is often initially connected with the scammer though through a recent loss, and was looking for companionship or someone to talk to that can relate. In some instances, these happen via online dating apps or through social media dating chats which lead to more direct contact such as email and messaging. Online scams like this often see many good people lose much of their savings, or money that they just don't have (using credit cards, lines of credit, or borrowing) to scammers, who prey on the kindness of their victims. We like to hope is that the members of the public are aware of these kinds of scams as its seems that every time you turn around the scammers have another tactic. https://www.military.com//military-romance-scams-are-you-t

When you see a stop sign, make a complete stop and give yourself time to check surroundings before proceeding through an intersection. Rolling stops are risky! ... Reduced daylight hours make things harder to see, and there are still lots of cyclists and pedestrians on the road and using crosswalks. Avoid distractions, follow traffic signs and signals, and stay visible with headlights or reflective clothing.

Today, Cst. Heidi Stevenson’s name was unveiled on the Wall of Honour at Nova Scotia RCMP Headquarters in Dartmouth during a private ceremony for family and inv...ited guests. Etched in stone on the granite memorial wall of the Nova Scotia RCMP Headquarters are the names of those Nova Scotia RCMP members who left us too soon. This is a solemn and constant reminder of those who lost their lives in the line of duty. In front of the wall, the bronze statue of a lone member with his head bowed to show his remembrance and grief. The Stetson and gloves at his feet signify they belonged to a member who is no longer able to wear them and is not with us physically; however, remains with us in mind and in spirit. As an additional tribute to Heidi, the fitness centre at our Nova Scotia Headquarters has been named the Stevenson Fitness and Physical Activity Centre. Heidi’s name and regimental number are now proudly displayed within the centre, where we will continue to honour her bravery, dedication and service.
