Muslim Community urges Habitat for Humanity to honour its commitments and proceed with mediation. Evicting working class families is not what Habitat is about. This action will likely have extreme consequences to Habitats image, and make a bad financial situation even worse, erode trust, alienate volunteers, and tarnish the respect Habitat has earned over decades of service. Habitat Edmonton (HFH) was known internationally for its value based financial model that took into ...consideration sweat equity and a portion of wages to make home ownership accessible to working class Albertans. Because of a loss in grant revenue, and its potential over extension from a record setting build project (in conjunction with Jimmy Carter) Habitat is facing a financial shortfall. We recognize the difficulty Habitat is facing in honouring their prior commitments and are offering our support and assistance to help them work in good faith and partnership to find a mutual solution for those impacted. Unfortunately, the recent actions of HFH come across as heavy handed, especially against a vulnerable segment of the population. These are the same people to assist whom HFH was created. Habitat International has urged the Edmonton chapter to engage in mediation. Time is running out for these marginalized families. Despite pressure from all sides Habitat Edmonton does not appear to be negotiating in good faith, four families are in imminent danger of being evicted from the homes they helped build this isnt right, it isnt the habitat we know, appreciate, and have volunteered with. We are asking that: 1. HFH immediately cease any and all evictions. 2. HFH needs to come to the table with all affected clients for Mediation to address the issues at play (evictions, contract change, HFH financial impediment etc). 3. Engage in good faith resolution, since those who are residing in HFH property have put 500 hours of sweat equity to make the project(s) possible.
