The periodic system, during the year, all the inventory that was bought go to Purchases account and Accounts Payable. ... At the end of the year or year end, we can adjust the inventory account and cost of goods sold with the physical inventory. The perpetual system, when we bought inventory goes directly to inventory account and accounts payable and when we sell, goes to the cost of good sold account and reduces the inventory account. This being said, It is recommendable to use the periodic system for small businesses and the perpetual system for big businesses. If at the beginning of the business we can have detailed information of the inventory, I recommend to use perpetual system. It would be very helpful for clients who do not have any control of inventory.
