The City of Winnipeg is implementing new regulations because of the COVID-19 pandemic. - All event and festival permits have been cancelled until the end of Ju...ne. - Play structures and picnic areas inside city parks will be closed until further notice. - There will be new temporary 'curbside pickup' loading zones established in the Downtown and the Exchange to allow for people to pick up food and retail items from local businesses. - There will now be one free hour of parking at all city parking meters until further notice. -Parking time limit restrictions will be removed in residential areas (though other restrictions remain). New pre-placement programs aim to generate bright futures for women December 10, 2019 Two new pre-placement programs are providing opportunities for women to ga...in specific hands-on experience and technical skills to further their success in gaining employment in construction and trades-related positions. With a goal to increase the numbers of women working in construction and trades-related positions, Manitoba Hydro is launching two new pre-placement programs the Power Electrician pre-placement program and the Power Line Technician pre-placement program for women. Within our organization, we have a relatively low percentage of women employed in construction and trades-related positions, said Chuck Steele (Director, Engineering & Construction) One of the largest barriers for women to pursue a career in these areas is access to experience. Our new programs address that barrier head-on by providing women with an opportunity to gain specific hands-on experience and technical skills upgrading. The intent of the pre-placement programs is to improve their chance of success as they start out and ensure they have every opportunity to build on their existing skills and experiences. The new programs are based on the successful recruitment model of Manitoba Hydro’s Indigenous Pre-placement Programs, which have assisted in growing our Indigenous workforce from seven per cent in 2001 to now over 19 per cent in 2019. Our workforce needs to be highly skilled and effective, but it also needs to reflect the diversity of our province this is one of our corporate goals, said Polly Bergen (Employment Strategy Coordinator, Recruitment & Diversity). The new programs really open the doors for women to consider a career at Manitoba Hydro, and actively show them that the organization is behind their success by supporting their development right from the start. Out of 1350 trades positions within the organization only 2.4 per cent of those are currently held by women. We know we can do better, said Shane Mailey (Vice-President, Transmission). Across the organization, we have remained at approximately 24 per cent representation of women for over 10 years, despite our workforce target of 30 per cent representation. We need to do a better job of attracting women not only into our trades, but also into technician, technology and engineering fields. The new pre-placement programs are a start. Online applications are now being accepted via the Power Electrician pre-placement program until December 27.
