2 hours before the mast. 1.5 actually. Have you read 2 years before the mast? I did when I was young. It described the hardship and suffering that was associated with being a sailor on the early 1800s merchant ships. ... I recall visualizing how cold and ice encrusted they and their ship got. It seemed utterly miserable at times. I've been quite cold a few times in my life, but none quite that extreme. So although I can picture it, it doesn't have the same deep impact on me There are a few takeaways: You are stronger and more resilient than you know. Our ancestors survived incredible hardships. Whenever I'm on the water and it's snowing, I am reminded of this book and what it taught me. Words are worlds. If you are bored, narrow minded, unhappy, or depressed - then read. Expand your thinking. At the very least, you will make yourself a titch better or have more perspective and that is a good thing. You can't fully feel gratitude or humility without loss, hardship, or suffering. That doesn't mean the hard things you endure are all positive. Loss and pain are loss and pain. But there are gifts in there too. You might not be in a place to see or realize them for weeks, months or years. But they're there. You'll notice I said feel and not be grateful. It is a deep feeling that isn't just a superficial icing from writing a gratitude journal. Journaling like that is very helpful. Those deep feelings result from deep upset, despondency, anger, and sadness. Getting in tune with the deepest parts of you isn't some artsy exercise. It's deep work and it's hard. And it has corresponding benefits. That is all. . . #amREADY #personaldevelopment #resilience coach #giftofsuffering #perspective #2yearsbeforethemast #dothework #deepwork

How is your resilience bank account? Nearing empty? Fairly full? Not sure, you don't think about it? No right answer or trick question. Just something to think about. For me, resilience has many facets. Mindset, perspective, hard work, physical health, and what could be referred to as self care. But it is more than getting through or bouncing back from inevitable challenge. It is building up a reserve or buffer before dealing with challenge or loss as well. ... Building a buffer is something we don't do well. We don't take in all the good around us, we don't linger or focus on it, and we don't allow ourselves to enjoy it. On average 2/3rds of what happens to you is positive. Even when things are terrible. You might not see it, feel it, or feel right enjoying it. But it is there. Every day is a gift. That means you have ample opportunity to build your resilience account full of positive experiences, gratitude, love, laughs and joy. That will carry you through the next difficult time much better than being negative, down, anxious, or angry. During this cold winter, a look back to a lazy float down a canal with friends during the dog days of summer. A memory that fills the account, a shared experience that brings a smile. The warmth of the day, the laughs, and the laziness of it all. It's so easy not to do that. And even easier to do it in a rush and not allow it to sink in. I hope you have a full resilience account. If not, make it a priority to seek out experiences that might help you do that. Teach or help someone. Laugh. Love deeply. I'm putting together a how to start or get back into exercise post. I could go on and on about weights vs cardio, sets and reps, how many days a week, etc. And I'll cover some of those considerations. But you know the secret to living a healthier life? To gaining motivation that lasts week in, week out, for years on end? Do you know the secret hack that can help you make you persevere when exercise gets hard, you get too busy, or are tempted to quit?... It is about the space between where you came from and your death. That is the space that doesn't prod or push you to exercise against your will. It is the perspective that draws you forward and compels you to be healthier and get more from life. This is uncomfortable work. If you look deeply at the uncertain space you have left and ask what legacy you want to leave. How you want to live it with more energy, less pain, greater mobility, more activity...if you really think about these concepts deeply, you will exercise. The sets, reps, and exercise program doesn't matter as much. This. This is what matters. Get this squared away and you won't look for ways to avoid exercise and have better diet habits. Only about 1 to 3% of you will do this on average. Look at your sunset and work back from that. #amready #exercise #weightloss #dothework #perspective #personaldevelopmentconsultant #I'llstartsometime

Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars. Khalil Gibran If you are going through a difficult time right now, you are also learning, growing, and it will help you do good in the world. ... Difficulties suck. There is no candy coating that. But in time, you can harvest and share what you learned. Remind yourself of that often. #practicalcoaching #personaldevelopmentcoach #perspectivehelps #copingskills

A lot of talk in the news about Bitcoin and the stock market recently. Typical of clickbait media, a lot of the information is misleading, wrong, or is intended to sow fear/stress. On average, investors who trade simply by the headlines go bankrupt within 3 years. So what is a person to do? Maybe you want to be more educated about your investments, have better answers to your investment advisor's questions, or maybe you manage your own investments? ... Either way, there are some approaches I have used that work well for me. They reduce fear, provide me with a more accurate view of what is going on, and enable me to make more educated decisions about what might happen going forward. This certainly isn't investment advice. However, if it helps you at all, then that is the point. I did include a simple technical 'chart' analysis. Don't worry about it if it is all confusing or hard to read. The messages are what is important - to provide yourself with a more objective context to the 'sky is falling' news stories. https://amready.ca//fear-of-destabilized-stock-market-and/ #bitcoin, #investing, #amready, #gamestopstock, #redditinvesting #perspectiveiseverything #personaldevelopment

Leaving 2020 behind and heading into 2021. A day of fun in the snow with my son - exploring, having fun, and helping some stranded folks.

**Sound needed** Some people ask me why I include exploring/camping/the outdoors in personal development, health, and happiness. I found this clip from a couple of years ago. From a 4 wheeling perspective, it couldn't be more underwhelming. ... There is a concept I am going to increasingly bring into focus. It is a concept that can bring much greater life satisfaction, meaning, and happiness. It is counter-intuitive in the way that it works. It is also really sneaky and if you aren't BRUTALLY honest in how you handle it, it works in reverse. I see it all around me, all the time. Intention. ...Continue reading

Are you irritated, angry, or upset as a result of social media? If so, you are far from alone. I created amREADY to empower people to be healthier and happier by providing information and support. Providing information that is practical, relatable, actionable, and that will achieve lasting results is really challenging. In addition to the research, I've conducted a series of experiments to better my understanding. In addition, it helps me share it in a way that is simple and practical.
