Smarter Every Week #6 Oil Viscosity - I run into this topic a lot and found this nice graph to help explain but let's start with some base information. xW-xx... -- 'xW' indicates the oils resistance to flow in negative degree temperatures only. That means on cold start up and for the first couple of minutes before the engine starts warming up. The 'W' stands for winter. -- 'xx' indicates the viscosity at above freezing temperatures. This means any time the oil temp isn't below 0c A lot of people have the idea they should run 5w30 in the winter and 10w30 in the summer because "10w30 is thicker the 5w30" but there is no outwardly noticeable difference between the two at temps higher then freezing. When choosing the right oil for your engine think about the conditions you're driving in and how you want the oil to perform. I can help with suggestions as well. Smarter Every Week #5 Oil change intervals - is 5000km still the standard? The answer: Yes and No Yes - if conventional oil is used in an older, worn engine. Conventional base oil characteristics can't be as closely predicted compared to synthetic oil meaning that without costly oil analysis no one really knows how well the oil will last outside of 5000km... No - Nowadays most vehicle manufacturers are requiring the use of synthetic or semi-synthetic oils in their engines in order to get as much fuel economy as they can and as a result are recommending oil changes less often How far can you go between oil changes? The simplest answer is whenever the vehicle manufacturer says to, because major oil brands don't recommend exceeding vehicle recommendations. Those are the general "rules". Now for the exception - Amsoil Signature Series gas and diesel oils are designed and, more importantly, tested to guarantee you won't have to change your oil for one full year or 25,000km (whichever comes first) while still offering unparalleled protection for your engine *Disclaimer* Always be sure to check your oil level regularly, regardless of how often you change your oil www.vernonsynthetics.com
