Through deployments of robotic ice-avoiding profiling floats from the CCGS Amundsen between 2017 and 2019, researchers from Takuvik Joint International Laboratory demonstrate that net phytoplankton growth occurred even under 100% ice cover as early as February and that it resulted at least partly from photosynthesis. ... ___________________________________________________ It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of professor Louis Fortier. Louis has dedicated his life and career in contributing to the success of Arctic sciences in Canada. One of his greatest accomplishments was to equip Canada with the research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen, whose scientific mandate is now managed by our organization. Deployment of a baited camera during Leg 2 of the 2020 expedition allowed the capture of this video of a halibut trying to eat a hagfish. Little did it know about the hagfish special tricks... Indeed, when captured and held, the hagfish secrete microfibrous mucus, which expands into up to 20 litres of sticky, gelatinous material when combined with water. Quite impressive!

University of Toronto’s researchers who sampled Arctic marine sediments from the Amundsen over 2014-2017 detected indigo denim microfibers. They found that one pair of used jeans can release about 56000 microfibers per wash. Blue jeans, the world’s single most popular garment, are an indicator of the widespread burden of anthropogenic pollution by adding significantly to the environmental accumulation of microfibers from temperate to Arctic regions.... pour la version française: https://amundsenscience.ulaval.ca//communicati/nouvelles/
