November 11th. Remembrance Day. Today is the day that we honour every person who fought, lived and died to protect our liberty and our freedom. Today is the day we remember the battles fought, internal and external, in the pursuit of global safety and human rights.... Today is the day we remember those who fought, because without their hardships and sacrifices many more of us would be nothing more than a memory. Today we are taking a moment to view and to hold some of our museum's artifacts from these global struggles, artifacts that tear the world wars from their static pages in the history books and make them REAL. To the left is a page from a dossier of evidence compiled for the Nuremberg trial. Pictured is the site of two mass graves, dug for hastily-executed Jewish concentration camp prisoners, as they were deemed to be too unwell to join an evacuation ahead of the Allied approach. Centered are a pair of briefly-worn concentration camp boots, crafted in a Nazi slave labour factory. To the right is a hand-written letter mailed from Auschwitz, the most notorious of all death camps, bearing a torn postage stamp that would have been adorned with a portrait of Adolf Hitler. The history of the 1900s was written in blood, but thanks to the courage and determination of countless people - from the homefront to the front lines, WE ARE STILL HERE. We must never forget their struggle against the systemic racism, hatred, and greed that fueled the wars of the past and we must never forget OUR RESPONSIBILITY to continue this struggle into the future. We remember and we will never forget. Thank you.
