Foot FAQ/Fact Friday Q: My 2nd toe is bent and is sore, what can I do about it? A: You may have a hammer toe. A hammer toe is when the toe is bending or curling... down instead of being straight. Hammer toes happen most commonly on the 2nd and 3rd toes but can affect any of the toes. A hammer toe is when the toe bends down towards the ground and the middle of the toe is raised. You might find that there is callusing on the tip of the toe or even on the top of the toe that is raised up. Callusing means that there is too much pressure on that part of the toe and the body is trying to protect the softer skin. Hammer toes can be caused by wearing shoes that are too short. If you have a longer 2nd toe, you need to be especially aware of choosing shoes that fit all of your toes properly. Hammer toes can also occur if you have a bunion, as the position of the big toe causes a shift in the 2nd toe. Claw toes occur when the toe bends up at the joint where the toes meet the foot and the middle and end of the toes curl under. Claw toes usually occur across multiple toes. Our toes are very important to overall foot stability and when your feet roll inwards or outwards too much then the toes grip the ground to help out. It is very important to wear shoes that give your toes enough space at the end. You should have about a 1/2 inch or finger width of space at the end of the toes. It is also important the shoes have adequate width so that the toes are not being squeezed together. Many people are not aware that shoes are made in widths; you just have to find the proper place to be measured and fit. Canadian Certified Pedorthists are trained to help educate you and fit your feet with the proper shoes. It is also important to have your feet assessed if you are experiencing pain in your toes, as hammer or claw toes can be a sign of improper biomechanics. Being fit with an off the shelf insole or custom made orthotic can provide the feet with the support and stability they need. There are also available products that fit under the toes and help to reduce pressure and stress on the toes. If you are experiencing pain in your toes you can contact your local Canadian Certified Pedorthist for an assessment. They can help determine the cause and talk about the available treatment options. Many people with diabetes have a reduced capacity for sensation in their feet and are unable to feel when a stone is caught in a sock or ill fitting shoes are c...ausing irritation. Delayed treatment combined with poor circulation, a common side effect of diabetes, results in slow healing and can cause small wounds to develop into an ulcer. In addition to carefully examining your feet every day for redness, abrasions, or any other change in their appearance it is recommended to wear seamless diabetic socks as they help increase blood flow to lower limbs, keep the feet warm, and limit sensation loss. Foot orthotics and modified shoes play a vital role in both the prevention and treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, as they relieve pressure on sensitive areas of your feet. See more
