The ripple effects of the post-coup crackdown in Turkey in Canada. Many people are fleeing not just journalists. I've felt it in my own practice too. https://www.thestar.com//journalists-seek-asylum-in-canada

As of today, Mexican citizens no longer need visas to visit Canada, only an electronic travel authorization completed online (which is standard for passport holders of all visa exempt countries except the USA) http://www.cic.gc.ca//re/tools/updates/2016/2016-12-01.asp

Friendly reminder to those traveling to Canada by air: 1. If you are a citizen and passport holder from a visa exempt country, after November 10th, 2016 you MUST have obtained an "Electronic Travel Authorization" (eTA) online, before coming to Canada. If you have not you WILL NOT be allowed to board the plane at your point of departure: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/eta-start.asp 2. If you are a dual citizen, you MUST be returning to Canada with your Canadian passport. ...If you hold a passport from a visa-exempt country you may be able to get special permission to travel with it, but this is only available if your travel is imminent and will only exist until January 31, 2017. If you have neither, you WILL NOT be allowed to board the plane at your point of departure. Get your Canadian passports! http://www.cic.gc.ca/engli/visit/dual-canadian-citizens.asp #travel #Canada #immigration

As of December 2017, citizens of #Romania and #Bulgaria will be able to come to Canada without a visa. This will mark the beginning of visa-free travel of all #EU citizens to Canada. In the meantime, those Romanians and Bulgarians who held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years, or who hold a US non-immigrant visa will be able to come to Canada visa-free as of May 2017. Remember though, just 'cause you don't need a visa you still need an eTA (http://www.cic.gc.ca/English/visit/eta.asp), and you are still going to be questioned (sometimes in detail and intensely) at the airport by CBSA, especially if you are from Eastern Europe! Very true. For every Legal Aid case I work on, I assume from the beginning that I will be doing more work than the hours granted by the certificate. http://thewalrus.ca/going-broke-in-legal-aid/

Canadian citizenship turned 70 yesterday. On January 3, 1947 Prime Minister King became the first Canadian citizen even. Before that, everyone born or naturalized in Canada was a "British subject".

The bizarro world of the Immigration Appeal Division where not enough proof means your marriage is not genuine, but too much proof means it's all fabricated to support someone's application for permanent residence. A child, years of visits back and forth, and personal struggle to be able to afford those visits and support your partner abroad - all fabricated so you can help some guy come to Canada. Even after two decisions by the Federal Court saying their "reasoning" is unreasonable. https://www.thestar.com//couple-accused-of-having-fake-mar
