This is a maple djembe shell I rough carved about 11 years ago. Did it all with a chainsaw. Soon I will be finishing it with planes, chisels and gouges. And one spot will be filled with clear resin enhanced with gold colored sparkles! When I started carving it looked like a full solid block. When I was nearly finished, I encountered a spot where a fold on the tree had grown completely over a strip of bark! as I was nearing completion of the shell I decided I would eventually just finish it because I had already invested so much time into the project (about 2 1/2 hours). I let it set for so long to let the wood "cure" and lessen the change of "movement" when I got to the finishing stages. Last 3 pics are the bark inclusion. The shiny bit on top is epoxy that I put there to make the top form to hold the resin in place.
New djembe shell I have been working on. Poplar, knots and all! 25 1/2" tall X 12" diameter (playing surface). Has been oiled and a couple coats of paste wax will be applied and buffed before the head goes on. This drum is intended for drum circles rather than as a performance drum.
Thinking tomorrow I'll take a few pics of the latest stuff and post them...Thinking tomorrow I'll take a few pics of the latest stuff and post them...

16 years ago today, my life changed for the better. On September 28 2004, 30 plus years of addiction came to an end. On that day God, as I understand God decided to relieve me of the burden of alcoholism. He did that in the morning that day. That afternoon He had a friend send me an invite to an African drumming circle happening that very evening. Sick as I was, I still managed to make it there, and that was my introduction to African drums. That evening with the drums change...d me and my life path in ways I could never have imagined. It led me to finding my own soul, to finding the path to a whole new group of friends, a new Spiritual life, and to me forming my own business building and selling African drums. And it made me ready for f the woman who came into my life and became my wife. So, I say "thank you God, for giving me 16 years of sober life". One step at a time, one day at a time.... See more
Now that Hurricane Teddy has passed it's time to get out and see if Teddy left me any more project wood... I'll try to get a pic or 3 to post as well...
Forgot to post this earlier. A djembe I repaired for a friend. New goatskin head and my new tuning tool I made for this job and every drum build and tuning to follow.
