What is the origin of Santa? I love ancient folklore, myths and exploring the cosmology of cultures. As a lover of plants, fungi, nature and someone with Nordic ancestry, I deeply resonate with the origins of Santa being connected with the Siberian and Nordic Shamanic people, and the Amanita mushroom. The Siberian and other Nordic Shamans would travel bearing the gift of the amanita muscaria (fly agaric mushroom) in their medicine sacs. As medicine carriers, and to honor ...the spirit of the amanita, they dressed in red and white. They travelled in the snow with reindeer, decorated their trees with amanita (to dry) and sent gifts of dried amanita down chimneys to inspire transformation, magic and to call in the return of the light. The reindeer love to eat these red and white mushrooms, and may have even helped them to fly. Today, I spend time connecting with my family and honoring our ancestors, calling upon the spirit of the Amanita muscaria and the light of the new dawn Holiday blessing to all.

Join us for a day of learning plant medicine and medicine making with Cowichan healer, Della Rice Sylvester on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Quw'utsun First Nations people (the Cowichan Valley). Della (Rice) Sylvester is a First Nations' Medicine woman and healer, cultural keeper, singer, ethnobotonist, & workshop trainer of the Cowichan peoples on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. At an early age, Della was trained on ethical uses and practices with pl...ant relations from her aunties and grandmothers. Engaged deeply in traditional way of knowing, Della has vast knowledge of Pacific Northwest plants and their medicinal uses and is familiar with plant identification, stories associated with each, cultural protocols, how to make salves/medicine. Della is a dynamic presenter and infuses both Indigenous knowledge systems with western knowledge systems.
