Styling is so much fun and our favorite day but it’s also a lot more work than it seems. Creating a finished room starts with... *Setting up a Plan for what needs to be highlighted, repeated or is missing in the room - colors, textures, new objects and how to use personal objects. *Shopping for all the styling pieces. This is usually several different stores. *Arriving at the home with bags in hand, unpacking and assessing what’s going to go where. This is the fun part and ...also the time when you discover you needed one or two more things. Outdoor Living Rooms are quickly becoming the place to be. With all the current issues of close proximity inside, people are moving their gathering spaces outside. So make your side yard into an incredibly inviting destination! Our clients had a vision to somehow use their landscape to spend more quality time in their yard. We carved out a circle for the hardscape using a hard-packed decomposed granite. Inserted a steel structure in the sloped hill for a cantilevered bench se...at - the bench is curved concrete matching the diameter of the circle on the ground. Planted fescue grass and added succulents to the corten steel planter box and grid trellis. Happy Earth Day! Growing up in Alaska I've had the pleasure of views like this one as frequently as I want. I've flown in a Cessna along a stream between a glacier and a mountain, landed on a lake near the face of a glacier and sat on the wings as the current slowly rotated the airplane. The treadmill of life faded away and it was just us and nature's simple, complex beauty. It's hard to capture in a photo what the eye sees so a special shoutout to Rich Manalang on Unsplash who took this photo while on a cruise in Glacier Bay, Alaska.

This is a perfect representation of my design aesthetic. Natural, organic, unforced, artistic and different. It's probably because I'm from Alaska that I have such a need for connection to nature. In this home, the San Francisco Bay is right outside the windows and the collaboration between indoor and outdoor is seamless. Colors, materials and patterns were selected using a concept called Bio-mimicry. The orange accents were selected as a reference to the California poppy, t...he state flower. The design principles for this home are based on sustainability...from energy efficient heating and cooling to FSC-certified woods, all organically-certified fabrics, rugs, carpets and furnishings to NO off-gassing of any finishes.
