September 30th is Orange Shirt Day, a day to honour and remember the experiences of all students who were taken from their families to attend Indian Residential Schools in Canada. The day is inspired by the story of Phyllis Webstad. On her first day at residential school in 1973, Phyllis was stripped of her new orange shirt, a shirt that brought her a sense of affirmation and dignity. Each year on September 30th we wear orange to remember all the children like Phyllis who wer...e taken from their communities, and forced to leave behind their cultures and traditions. As Phyllis says, Every Child Matters. Each year we use this day and week to ensure that the memory of the residential school system is not lost, that the inter-generational damage is recognized, and that we continue down the long road towards reconciliation. This September 30th we ask YOU to join us in wearing orange to remember Phyllis and all the children like her. How will you be observing Orange Shirt Day? What events are happening in your Friendship Centres and your homes? Let us know in the comments! #orangeshirtday #everychildmatters #WearOrange
Last week brought the #FallEquinox and many signs of fall are visible this week. Many of our Friendship Centre communities will be busy this fall with harvest, hunting and preparing medicines and food for the coming winter. Fall is also an excellent time for prayer and rest as we experience the changing seasons. #ABFriendshipCentres #FriendshipCentreMovement #ReconnectWithMotherEarth

As wildfire smoke creeps in to Canada's western provinces, many of us are thinking about the cause of these fires and how they are related to climate change. Many wildfires are impacted by human behavior, either in the way they start (ie. campfire or cigarettes) or in their severity and frequency. Wildfires can also have serious health effects, some of which include: nose and sinus irritation; scratchy throat; mild cough; headache and sore and watery eyes. If symptoms become ...more severe (ie. severe cough, dizziness, chest pain), seek medical attention immediately. Be sure to support those who are most at risk at this time, that includes Elders, small children, pregnant women, people with heart or lung conditions and those who have continued and strenuous outdoor work. #Wildfires #ClimateChange #Health #AbFriendshipCentres #FriendshipCentreMovement Alberta Native Friendship Centres Association - ANFCA National Association of Friendship Centres See more

Thanks so much to the Athabasca Native Friendship Centre for sharing wisdom on harvesting, drying and using fresh mint. What medicines are you harvesting this year? #Indigenous #Medicines #ReconnectWithMotherEarth #AbFriendshipCentres #FriendshipCentreMovement
