My name is Leslie, I am the founder and owner of Inked Angels Tattoo here in Kelowna. It deeply pains me that a recent situation has escalated to the point wher...e it requires a public address, however in the nature of transparency I feel being forthright is the best course of action. Recently a customer purchased a gift certificate, which they were told at the time was non-refundable. Gift certificates at Inked Angels Tattoo are created with monetary values, as opposed to time values. Upon receiving this gift certificate as a present, the customer somehow came under the false impression that the value amount translated to 8 hours of my tattooing time. My hourly rate is $170 and has been consistently so since January 2020. The amount on the gift certificate did not equate to 8 hours of my time. After her consult the customer became displeased upon learning this, and did not show up to her scheduled appointment, which costs me both time and money. Additionally, this customer created an unacceptable adversarial and combative atmosphere for myself, my employees, and other customers when she did enter the shop to discuss. Upon being re-told that gift certificates are non-refundable but she was welcome to rebook or sell the gift certificate or transfer it to a friend or family member, this customer took it upon herself to launch a full-on character assault against myself and my business. The last several days have been extremely painful for me, as I have been the subject of fake reviews, outright lies, phone harassment and slander. This woman, who was once so excited to receive a gift certificate for my services, began mocking my art in public forums online. While I am under absolutely under no obligation to refund a gift certificate the purchaser was advised was non-refundable, I have made this reconciliatory offer in good faith in hopes that the personal attacks against me, and lies about my establishment will cease. Please understand, this shop is my dream. When I set out in this industry to create my own brand and business, the first and foremost foundation I wanted to build upon was creating a space where women felt safe, respected, and comfortable. I have given every ounce of my heart and every peace of my soul into seeing this vision come to life in Inked Angels Tattoo. Cleanliness is not a duty; it is a point of pride. Creating a safe environment is not an obligation, it’s a fulfillment of my dreams. Tattooing you is not my work, it’s an honour, and something I take incredible pride in. Each one of you who walk through the doors of this studio are my dream materializing in front of me. I want nothing more than to make you feel safe and happy and to send you home with beautiful artwork we both can be proud of and cherish. I wanted to hold my head high and do as society teaches us, take it on the chin, don’t cry, but I can no longer do that. This has hurt me on a deep and personal level, and while a small part of me wants to strike back with the shop video footage displaying this woman’s outright unacceptable behaviour so you can see what I have endured, I could never, after witnessing first hand the damage that internet acts of anger can cause. I want to treat this person kinder than they have treated me, I want to show compassion and understanding where I was not given it. I want the tears I have cried these last several days to mean something, and so all I can do is use this as a very painful teaching moment. Moving forward, in addition to verbally informing clients that gift certificates are non-refundable, we will also be asking them to sign a waiver of acknowledgement. We will be adding this written statement directly onto to the gift certificates as well. It is a terrifying thought that one angry person can have such an impact on a small business / family by soliciting the help of friends to post and share outright falsehoods. I have no ability to remove these false reviews, all I can do is one by one go back through my records to confirm that these individuals did not receive tattoo services at my establishment and reply to these false reviews stating such. This will be time out of my days, in addition to the money already lost by the disruption to services this individual has caused. But you know what, I will do it. I will do it because I love this shop, and I love my clients, and I know in my heart what we have created together is worth fighting for. This note is many things, it’s an explanation, it’s a clarification of recent events, it’s some insight into what I wanted the Inked Angels experience to be, but mostly it’s this: a thank you letter. Thank you to the kind and wonderful individuals who have helped make Inked Angels what it is. Thank you to my clients who know me well enough to know the truth about the great thing we’ve got going hereand lastly thank you to the individuals who have wreaked such havoc in my life and hurt my heart so badly this past week. My business will be stronger for it in the end, the way you’ve gone about teaching me these harsh lessons regarding the human capacity for cruelness has been heartbreaking, but it’s shown me the kindness within me and within the people around me. I just want to say a special thank you to Roo Phelps for taking the time out of her busy schedule to listen to my encounter and encourage me to put my story out there.
