ERIKA DeFREITAS: everything she inspires remains, belongs to light MacLaren Art Centre (December 10 to March 14, 2021) Curated by Emily McKibbon Even in the after she is subversive for not being ‘fixed,’ artist Erika DeFreitas notes in the fifth image in the series arriver avant moi devant moi (which roughly translates to: to arrive before me, in front of me). Written in response to Gustave Courbet’s L’Atelier du peintre (18541855), which DeFreitas viewed at the Musée D’...Orsay in Paris while on an artist residency, this statement reflects the admiration and connection the artist holds for Jeanne Duval (ca. 1820 ca. 1862). Duval, a Haitian-born French actress and dancer, is just one of many Black women artists, muses and historical figures invoked in this presentation, from an unnamed subject featured in a painting by Frédéric Bazille in she returns in the midst of echoes and in the pause and the mirrored peaks to Edmonia Lewis, Senga Nengudi, Howardena Pindell and countless others in DeFreitas’ very strongly may be sincerely fainting. The process of writing art history is one of amplification and repetition; here, DeFreitas’ poetic gestures reimagine a canon in which Black women’s artistic labour is as valued and commemorated as the work of their contemporaries. This exhibition is complemented by a text by Daisy Desrosiers. Pictured: Erika DeFreitas, arriver avant moi, devant moi (no. 5), digital inkjet print, courtesy the artist. In December 2016, Mitchell F. Chan exhibited Something Something National Conversation at Angell Gallery, scored by the sound installation Infinite Newsfeed. Four years later, and so much has changed. Four years later, and so much has stayed the same. Join us for the 2020 incarnation of this installation, taking place virtually on December 16 via Zoom from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. https://bit.ly/SomethingSomething2020 Of, "Something Something...," Chan says: Something Something Nati...onal Conversation (in 2 characters or less) is a meditation on how digital communication technologies --and social media in particular -- overload our sense of legibility. It is a visual metaphor for the way digital culture has transformed our understanding of content from the way it was once definedas the substantive meaning of a textinto content as we now know it: an amorphous type of capital which, like other types of capital, exists primarily as a means to reproduce itself. I began this work in 2015 and, either through prescience or just coincidence, debuted it shortly after the 2016 American Presidential election. The election was, of course, a major turning point for how we would look at online discourse. It was no longer harmless. Somehow, what had seemed like nothing more than a bunch of hot air online had conjured a very real presidency. It was like a magic trick." Read more at angellgallery.com, or contact [email protected] for more information. @mitchellfchan has exhibited innovative and ambitious artworks across North America since 2006. In 2009, he was awarded the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Trustee Scholarship in Art & Technology Studies. His work has been covered and discussed in numerous media outlets including VICE, Canadian Art, Slate, the Toronto Star, and Gizmodo. He has worked primarily in large-scale public art projects since founding the firm Studio F Minus in 2008. His gallery work explores the liminal zone between legibility and illegibility. . . . . . . #AngellGallery #MitchellFChan #Canadianart #Canadianartist #installation #virtualexhibition #somethingsomethingnationalconversation

ERIKA DeFREITAS is a contributor to an important new publication edited by Grace Aneiza Ali, "Liminal Spaces: Migration and Women of the Guyanese Diaspora." Pictured: Erika DeFreitas' mother, Cita DeFreitas, and grandmother, Angela DeFreitas (nèe Vieira) in their home in Georgetown, Guyana, then British Guiana, circa 1965. DeFreitas Family Collection, Courtesy of Erika DeFreitas. https://www.openbookpublishers.com/product/1208:... Liminal Spaces is an intimate exploration into the migration narratives of fifteen women of Guyanese heritage. It spans diverse inter-generational perspectives from those who leave Guyana, and those who are left and seven seminal decades of Guyana’s history from the 1950s to the present day bringing the voices of women to the fore. The volume is conceived of as a visual exhibition on the page; a four-part journey navigating the contributors’ essays and artworks, allowing the reader to trace the migration path of Guyanese women from their moment of departure, to their arrival on diasporic soils, to their reunion with Guyana. Eloquent and visually stunning, Liminal Spaces unpacks the global realities of migration, challenging and disrupting dominant narratives associated with Guyana, its colonial past, and its post-colonial present as a ‘disappearing nation’. Multimodal in approach, the volume combines memoir, creative non-fiction, poetry, photography, art and curatorial essays to collectively examine the mutable notion of ‘homeland’, and grapple with ideas of place and accountability. This volume is a welcome contribution to the scholarly field of international migration, transnationalism, and diaspora, both in its creative methodological approach, and in its subject area as one of the only studies published on Guyanese diaspora. It will be of great interest to those studying women and migration, and scholars and students of diaspora studies. Grace Aneiza Ali is a Curator and an Assistant Professor and Provost Fellow in the Department of Art & Public Policy, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. @erikadefreitas416 @grace_aneiza_ali #LiminalSpaces

In advance of tomorrow's virtual drop-in viewing, please enjoy this recent artist talk with Dan Hudson for Calgary's Nickle Galleries. "Dan Hudson discusses the processes and inspirations behind his multimedia works. Hudson’s art practice combines elements of documentary narrative, scientific investigation, and personal journal as a way to connect everyday life with astronomical cycles and concepts of time. Hudson is a Canadian visual artist working with various media includi...ng painting, photography, video and installation. His project-based practice uses cross disciplinary methodologies to explore concepts of time and the relationship between contemporary culture and the natural world. Hudson has a BFA with honours from York University (Toronto, Canada), studied anthropology at UCSD (California, USA), and attended art residencies in Banff, Yukon, Berlin and Leipzig. He regularly exhibits in group and solo exhibitions throughout North America and Europe." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFymO7CnDc8

Please join us online tomorrow evening for a drop-in virtual viewing of Dan Hudson's new video work, "Mayday," any time between 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. (registration link in bio). MAYDAY, 2020 Looping HD video, 07:00 minutes "Halfway between the vernal equinox and the summer solstice, the ancient Festival of Spring is celebrated on Mayday (May 1st). It is a time of re-birth. Mayday is also recognized as International Workers Day in support of labour rights. And, as we have seen in d...isaster movies, Mayday is a distress call for people in emergency situations. This year on May first, as we entered our second month of lockdown during the COVID-19 global pandemic, I was thinking about both the irony and appropriateness of the various associations for the word mayday. While alone in isolation, I was remembering wading through the crowds of people on the streets of Berlin during the past Mayday celebrations. In this video project, I edited footage I shot of those crowds to resemble fence pickets or perhaps prison bars. Through the bars, as if in a hallucination, we see visions of another place and another time, but it is unclear which side of the fence we are on." - Dan Hudson Please contact [email protected] for more information. @danhudsonart . . . . . . #AngellGallery #Canadianart #Canadianartist #contemporaryart #DanHudson #virtualevent

MARTÍNEZ: From Walking so Much in Circles, I Will End up Making a Sphere @isabel_m_martinez Installation photographs now online: https://angellgallery.com//from-walking-so-much-in-circles The exhibtion is on view by appointment only through October 24 (link in bio), or contact [email protected] for more information.... Alex Fischer @alex_harold "From Walking so Much in Circles, I Will End up Making a Sphere came into existence during the months of isolation granted by the pandemic. Not because of it, but in spite of it. Amid loud echoes from the misnamed Spanish flu a century ago. History runs in circles, the world is round, and we pace. Rather than deeming the indeterminate, the uncertain, the un-obvious as a weakness, I approach such states as portals that open our minds to unexpected forms of complexities. The works in this exhibition were made in collaboration with the Sun and the Moon. They are drawings burnt by sunlight and bathed in moonlight onto handmade gum bichromate emulsion, a 19th-century photographic printing process based on the light sensitivity of the bichromate salts. The emulsion was altered to give results it is not supposed to. The light drawings were devised through a half-blind way of working; balancing being planned, being ready, and being aware of the thing that happens. Treasures lie in the fine line between function and breakage, and the rigidity of photography is perfect for a little poking." Isabel M. GAVIN LYNCH @gavin_lynch___ Reanimating the Falls, 2020 Acrylic on canvas 60 x 72 inches... Of this painting, Lynch says, "I wanted to create some dynamic, almost psychedelic movement in a still image. The reference image in the centre is a film still from a Hayao Miyazaki movie, Princess Mononoke, which is about (amongst other things) ecological destruction, reckoning with our own bias, and our ability to change. I've always wanted to make a painting of this waterfall scene, but had to find a way to bring the still back to life, hence the mis-en-abyme (picture in a picture) approach." "Toronto: gigantic art projections are coming to your neighbourhood" by Leah Collins for CBC Arts , featuring the work of Erika DeFreitas.

Angell Gallery 20.08.2020

TONIGHT through October 3, Erika DeFreitas' video work will illuminate The Canada Malting Co. silos, curated by The Bentway for BigArtTO. "a composition for an elegy to what once was and all that remains; or, a score for the past, the present, the future tenses" The Essentials, curated by The Bentway as part of BigArtTO.... 9 Eireann Quay; The Canada Malting Co. silos, viewable on the west side of the building. SEP 30 - OCT 3, nightly from 8 to 11 p.m. "The remnants of architectural structures, some displaced from their original location in Toronto, carry the scores of time. A finger conducts, mitigating the meeting of the past with the present. What we witness is the collapsing of the space between, but perhaps what we experience in the fissures of unease is a longing for what may come to be; what the future holds for us. The elegy is composed of fragments extracted from eulogies written by the French philosopher Jacques Derrida to commemorate a number of his friends upon their passing. My use of Derrida’s words produces a new text that reflects our present moment, allowing for a merging of space and time. From words written about many, collapsed into the singular, this work may encompass us all. 'a composition for an elegy to what once was and all that remains; or, a score for the past, the present, the future tenses' (2020) is an invitation to pause and to consider what it means to embrace integral facets to the experience of being human; to grieve, to mourn, to encounter uncertainty and change, while reflecting on the recent past to imagine possibilities for the distant future. It offers a permissible moment to acknowledge that we have endured a past; a reckoning with our collective remembrance as we are at once unable to elude the present." @erikadefreitas416 @thebentway . . . . . . #ShowLoveTO #BigArtTO #PublicArt #ErikaDeFreitas #TheBentway

GAVIN LYNCH: Mixed Greens @gavin_lynch___ _lynch___n ANGELL GALLERY is proud to present Mixed Greens by Wakefield, Quebec-based Gavin Lynch. The exhibition runs from September 24 to October 24 by appointment, please contact [email protected] for more information.... Productive and generative are words Gavin Lynch uses to describe his time in the studio while self-isolating during the early months of the pandemic. For him, this past summer was a time to reflect on his progress to date as an artist and to ask himself questions about where he wants his paintings to go. Back in March, it felt like the world might be ending, but it also seemed like a good time for risk-taking, he says. The pandemic prompted me to start exploring avenues that I may not have otherwise. Until now, Lynch created bodies of work containing narrative threads that played out either in repeated motifs across paintings or in the arrangement of the works in the gallery. Stories often with environmental undertones were told primarily through landscapes composed of forms that referenced geometric abstraction, but were representational enough that viewers could situate themselves within recognizable settings. In early summer, I started investigating digital-editing tools and making landscapes that were more abstract, Lynch says. I wanted to challenge myself, and find ways to complicate my process of image-making. For example, few of the new paintings have horizon lines that anchor the composition. Ultimately, these works are about an artist finding new problems to resolve through painting. Thematic cohesion is secondary, although the works are unified by their spirit of experimentation. I wanted to show the best and most interesting paintings from the studio, he says. Of course, Mixed Greens references the main colour of my paintings, but perhaps this show actually presents a 'mixed bag' of directions my work could take. ARTIST FEATURE: Erika DeFreitas @erikadefreitas416 "How dark does it get when the lights go out? with Layne Hinton, Isabel M. Martínez, Colleen McCarten, and Laura Millard. Erika DeFreitas' solo exhibition at the @visualartscentre is now on view through Nov. 8. Please contact [email protected] for more information. __... There is a process (we look, touch, remove, collect, organize, place, revisit, recollect) (No. 1 8), 2014 It began with collecting stones from places I traveled to. It continued with carrying stones in my pockets. It grew into me collecting stones with my nephew, Logan. Now, after six years, this collection has grown and there are stones in every room in my house, one in every purse that I own, and one in each of my coat pockets. They have taken on a life of their own. They are now objects that contain a story, a memory, and a location in our history because of our collective actions. In my practice I explore the ways we experience loss, avoid it, navigate it and face it. There is a process (we look, touch, remove, collect, organize, place, revisit, recollect) continues this exploration. __ Erika DeFreitas is a Scarborough-based artist whose practice includes the use of performance, photography, video, installation, textiles, works on paper, and writing. Placing an emphasis on process, gesture, the body, documentation, and paranormal phenomena, she works through attempts to understand concepts of loss, post-memory, inheritance, and objecthood. DeFreitas’ work has been exhibited nationally and internationally including at Project Row Houses and the Museum of African American Culture, Houston; Fort Worth Contemporary Arts; Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita; Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery; Platform Centre for Photographic and Digital Arts, Winnipeg; and Gallery 44, Toronto. A recipient of the Toronto Friends of Visual Artist’ 2016 Finalist Artist Prize, the 2016 John Hartman Award, and longlisted for the 2017 Sobey Art Award, she has also been awarded several grants from the Canada Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Council.
