Make sure you clear your vents. They should be a minimum of 18 inches off the ground, but this is rarely enough for the snow we get here in Ottawa. You can lose hot water and heat if these vents are blocked. Carbon Monoxide can possibly build up in the home as well, if the safety systems on the furnace or hot water tank fail.

Don't store firewood indoors; mold can form on your walls!

Most of us have been there, bought a house (No structural or safety defects of course because you used the Angry Home Inspector), and after a couple of months you start picking up a few things that irritate you. Like kitchen counter outlets in a brand new $400,000.00 house; only two? Meets bare minimum code; until you plug in power blocks so you can have a toaster, kettle, blender, phone charger (s) both cordless and cell, a coffee grinder, your margarita maker, your electric skillet, etc, etc etc; and now its a fire hazard as you have overloaded the circuit. The angry home inspector looks for these small issues that have the potential to turn into big ones, allowing you to plan solutions so you can enjoy your new home.

Working with your Realtor and your Home Inpsector to buy your new home should be easy and stress free. As with the Home Inpsection industry, the Realty proffession receives some bad press, and as with Home Inpsectors, their will be some bad apples. You have an ideal situation when both your Realtor and your Home Inspector have your best interests at heart. Good Realtors don't fight the Home Inspector when the inspection proves the home as less then ideal. A Realtor want...s their client to buy a good home, this is how they generate repeat business. Glossing over issues that arise, in order to protect a commission, would not be a normal situation for most Realtors. The good Realtor knows full well that the client will continue to utilize them for the purchase of a home, even if it is the next one on the list, when they prove to have their clients best interest at heart. Todays message: Surround yourself with a trusted team. See more

15 questions to ask of your Home InspectorHomebuilders that now work as Home Inspectors, with no formal training, are they the right person for the job? I know this may come out as offensive to some inspectors, but it has to be said; home builders usually cause the problems that subsequent homeowners have to deal with. If they did not know the proper methods while building the home, what makes them an expert years later? An unknowledgeable inspector simply compounds their er...rors as the years go by. Getting sued is certainly a way to teach them their trade, but not the preferred method. There are some excellent home builders out there, but lets face it, the good ones continue to build homes, not change business names every three or four years when a development is complete. A good home inspector has an intimate knowledge with all of the trades, be they commercial or residential, gathered from years of experience working with or supervising groups of tradespersons (Homebuilders certainly should have this part covered). They are familiar with good building practices, not just the minimum code, but most importantly, they have formal training in a recognized course that offsets their lack of knowledge in certain areas. Research your inspector and use common sense when choosing them. There is nothing wrong with a Homebuilder working as a Home Inspector, they bring a lot to the table, just ensure they went that extra mile and expense for the proper training. http://www.inspectionlibrary.com/15-quest.htm See more
