Ann Slater Fresh Organic Vegetables 10.10.2021

Saturday fundraiser in acknowledgement of Truth and Reconciliation Day/Orange Shirt Day First, I want to acknowledge that I farm on the traditional land of the Anishinabewaki, Neutral and Mississauga - land which is part of Treaty 29 signed in 1827. My foremothers and forefathers immigrated from the British Isles and settled on this land. This is a very small gesture but on Saturday, at the St. Marys Farmers' Market, I will be selling my orange/yellow peppers (red and green ...peppers are not part of the fundraiser) and the few boxes of yellow beans which I have by donation. I will be making a $250 donation to the St. Marys Public Library and a $250 donation to the National Farmers Union. Any donations received on Saturday will be added to my donation and split equally between the two organizations. Why these two organizations? The St. Marys Public Library is a local organization. The library is where I go to learn more about the Truth of residential schools, the ongoing repercussions and our history of colonialism. The donation to the library will be directed towards resources on Truth and Reconciliation for me and the rest of the St. Marys area community to use to educate ourselves on the Truth and on the actions needed to begin meaningful reconciliation. The library has told me there are many wonderful resources they would like to add to their collection. The National Farmers Union is currently raising money to send a delegation to the 26th UN Climate Change "Conference of the Parties" in November in Glasgow. This delegation will include Indigenous farmers. The voices of Indigenous farmers must be heard. A small financial contribution to this initiative will help make sure Indigenous farmers will be in Glasgow to share their deep knowledge on climate change and what must be done to protect our Mother Earth. And I know the NFU will make sure the Indigenous and other farmers on the NFU delegation will share their experiences and knowledge from the conference with me and other NFU members over the coming year.

We all know the kind of week it has been, so head down to the St. Marys Farmers' Market and fill your basket with brightly coloured and tasty "summer" vegetables. And should you be ready for fall's soups and stews - Stew Slater's and Mari Veliz's Eshcol Farm will have organic beef and veal soup bones and stewing and ground meat. The market will be open rain or shine. Rubber boots needed?????? We'll find out tomorrow.

As usual, lots of great vendors planning to be at the St. Marys Farmers' Market on Saturday. I will have lots of slicing tomatoes, some heritage types, and lots of cherry tomatoes of various shapes, colour and flavours. And lots of other vegetables to go with the tomatoes.

A larva of a ladybird beetle (aka ladybug) having lunch. If you can separate the greens, you can see it is eating a cabbage worm, ie the larva of a white butterfly, which eat brassicas like this Napa cabbage seedling.

Rain or shine, I will be there with multi-coloured carrots, Napa cabbage, daikon radishes, some kale and my brother Stew's organic beef and veal. He all stocked up on beef and veal, so a good time for you to stock up as well.

The St. Marys Farmers' Market is open again this Saturday, December 14 at the Delmar Foods parking lot from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. This is a great time to stock up on certified organic beef and veal from Eshcol Farm. My brother Stew has a good supply of meat with all cuts available, including roasts, steaks, stewing meat, patties, sausages, ground (both 1 lb and 1 kg packages of ground beef), pepperettes and summer sausage. Pre-ordering of meat is encouraged. To pre-order ...send a pm or email ([email protected]) to me or pm Stew Slater. The vegetable supply will be more limited with carrots, Chinese (Napa) cabbage, daikon radishes and maybe some kale (if the snow melts). See you Saturday - rain, snow or sun.

The all-beef summer sausage and pepperettes made with organic beef from my brother's Eschol Farm make great Christmas gift or stocking stuffers. We will have both at the St. Marys Farmers' Market this Saturday. He will also have a good supply of organic veal, including some of the popular veal/pork sausages.

We're looking forward to seeing you this Saturday at the Market! Please remember that it starts at 10:00 now. We do need sufficient time for our vendors to set up properly so please do not arrive before 10.
