Did you know that women experience major depression twice as often as men do, and we’re two and a half times more likely than men to be on an antidepressant? This is a really interesting article (and podcast) from Dr. Aviva Romm that talks about why turmeric can help some women with depression. Read more or listen here:

Super excited for our Wild Collective Halifax session this week True connection is about spending time with people who make you feel heard and valued. It is about spaces where there is no judgement. Where you gain strength from the relationship, rather than feeling drained by it. It's all about lifting each other up!

THE GUT BRAIN AXIS... How is our digestion related to our brain and mood? The gut and the brain are in constant communication with each other through the endocrine, immune, and nervous systems. In the office, I often talk about the production of neurotransmitters (mood regulating chemicals), which are made in the gut and play a big role in the way we think and feel .... To make neurotransmitters our intestines need a variety of different bacteria. This is why having a healthy, diverse microbiome is so important. In order to achieve this balanced microbiome and to generate these mood regulating chemicals we need the proper nutrients. Therefore, what we eat and the condition of our gut can influence how we experience stress, feelings of anxiety, depression, and even our cognitive function (our ability to think, focus, our memory and our concentration). Making sure you are getting the proper probiotic-rich foods is important. These can be things like sauerkraut, kimchi and kefir! Also make sure you are getting prebiotics - these are the things that feed that good bacteria. Prebiotics are things like oats, apples , green leafy veggies , flax seeds, and garlic! It's also REALLY important to decrease the foods that cause inflammation to the cells of the gut, like caffeine, alcohol, sugar, etc. A healthy gut helps to support a healthy mood

We are seeing some interesting data emerge since the initial lockdown phase of COVID-19 on loneliness. There was a study done in the UK and it found that during the initial phase of COVID-19 lockdown, rates of loneliness were high and were associated with a number of social and health factors. Researchers found that over 1/4 of respondents reported high ratings of isolation and loneliness. In the week prior to completing the survey, 49% to 70% of respondents reported feeling ...isolated, left out or lacking companionship. Risk factors for loneliness were being in a younger age group, being separated or divorced, meeting clinical criteria for depression, greater emotion regulation difficulties, and poor-quality sleep due to the COVID-19 crisis. They also found higher levels of social support, being married or co-habiting and living with a greater number of adults were protective factors for perceived social isolation. But why do we care about this? Loneliness is a significant public health issue and is associated with worse physical and mental health as well as increased mortality risk. THIS is why I'm so excited for our first Wild Collective Halifax meeting this week! We are learning all about women's health and self care while making meaningful connections Our Fall semester sold out, but we have started a wait-list for our Winter 2021 semester. If you are interested, make sure you are on the list More on the study here: https://buff.ly/3kHuPXY

WAKING AT NIGHT... Do you wake up during the night every night? Cortisol, our stress hormone, is one of the many hormones secreted by our adrenal glands. It is also one of the most frequently affected when we experience chronic daily stress. The most common symptoms that your cortisol is out of whack include:... Waking in the night, or early morning Fatigue (particularly early morning fatigue on waking) Rapid Weight gain or struggling to lose weight Low libido Increased susceptibility to infections Our bodies can adapt to this increased stress for some time, and we may get used to functioning below this optimal capacity, but eventually it catches up to us. If you experience any of the above it may be time to look at your cortisol and other hormones

When I talk to my patients about their diets, fibre always comes up . Often times we talk a lot about it because people ARE NOT getting enough. But did you know there are different types of fibre? This article explains the difference really well and also why you need both types:

I've been working hard on my nighttime routine lately Poor sleep puts people at higher risk for diabetes and obesity. It can worsen existing disorders as well, like increasing the amount of pain in an arthritis patient and blood pressure levels in individuals with hypertension.
