Is your body giving you signals that it’s time for a cleanse? You might be thinking, "hey, isn't my body equipped to detoxify itself?". The answer is, absolutely! ... However, our increasingly toxic environment can leave our bodies overburdened and the major detox pathways (liver, digestion, skin, etc.) become compromised or inefficient. The resulting poor digestion, colon sluggishness and dysfunction, reduced liver function, and poor elimination through the kidneys, respiratory tract, and skin all add to increased toxicity. Some symptoms you may be experiencing include: Running out of energy in the afternoon Inability to lose weight Increased allergies to environment and food sensitivities Mood swings, bursts of anger, depression, or anxiety Cholesterol & blood sugar imbalance Unexplained headaches Brain Fog and lack of mental clarity Muscle aches and stiffness Bad breath or body odor (oiiiii!!) Skin Issues: rashes, acne & eczema Poor digestion, bloating, gas, & Irregular bowel movements Chronic fatigue Hormonal imbalance causing severe PMS or menopausal symptoms Your symptoms are how your body communicates that there is an excess or deficiency and it needs your help! Warming winter cleanse ritual During the colder months we can warm up with a little help from ginger . Not only is this root a great way to boost circulation and bring a little digestive fire (in a good way), it also has incredible healing qualities:... . Its digestive actions may serve to cleanse the build-up of waste and toxins in the colon, liver, and other organs . The high concentration of gingerol and shoga provide anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer and anti-spasmodic effects on the gastrointestinal system . How to drink it? Make tea by slicing or grating fresh ginger root into hot water and add a squeeze and slice of . Deeelish, especially first thing in the morning to stimulate digestive enzymes and to support getting rid of toxins that accumulate over night! Try it out tomorrow Xx Ps if you’d like my list of Energizing Cleanse Superfoods for Winter list, head to the link in the comments

Do you ever catch yourself making decisions about food based on the 'all or nothing' mentality? This may sound something like, "I'll just get through the holiday season, allowing myself to have whatever, I deserve it. I'll get back on track in January. A clean start." You might also be on the opposite end of the spectrum, and say to yourself, "I'm eating super clean this holiday season. I can't allow myself to have any treat because the...y trigger me to get out of control. I'm staying away from carbs & sweets". This is the good old yo-yo diet mentality, which keeps us stuck in a vicious cycle of emotional ups & downs, restriction & binge habits, and good food vs bad food way of thinking. Over time, this wreaks havoc on our mental health, metabolism, and motivation to start all over, yet again. It’s exhausting & sucks the joy out of eating to say the least. This is exactly what I just finished teaching in my nutrition class this morning, where we talked about the underlying causes of cravings for sugar + junk foods & some real life solutions. I've also designed a whole new program around this topic, called the Holiday Support & Accountability Program (starts Nov. 28th) If you're looking for support, accountability, & resources like easy to follow meal plans + shopping guides to change this pattern, get rid of insatiable cravings, bloating, and energy crashes, this program is perfect for you! As the weather gets colder, you may notice you are wanting more warming root veggies instead of cooling greens! Tune in, you are a part of nature ~ so it makes sense that you are craving more root veggies that help to contract heat! Some beautiful and liver supporting root veggies to add to your cold weather grocery list include beets, carrots, and celery root.... Try this delish and satisfying borscht - I like to make a big batch and portion out single servings for lunch. You can add a protein (like chicken) to make a complete meal. Warming Veggieful Borscht 2 Tbsp coconut oil or olive oil 1 yellow onion, coarsely chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 can (16oz) of tomatoes, chopped 2 bunches of beets (about 1 lb), cubed 1 celery root, peeled and shredded 1 small green cabbage, chopped 3 carrots, coarsely chopped 4 cups of filtered water 3 cups of vegetable broth 1 cinnamon stick, or quarter tsp of ground cinnamon tsp allspice 1 tsp of sea salt cup of raw apple cider vinegar Garnish: 1/3 cup chopped dill or green onions How to make: In a large saucepan or pot, melt oil over medium heat. Add onion and cook for 5 minutes or until opaque. Add garlic, cinnamon stick, and allspice and cook for 30 seconds. Add tomatoes, beets, celery root, water, and broth. Cover, bring to a boil, and then simmer for 10 minutes over low heat. Stir in cabbage, carrots, and and cook for 10 - 15 minutes, depending on how crispy you like the carrots. Stir in vinegar and dill. Makes 7 servings For a printable version or this recipe, head to my blog at annaliisakapp.com/blog

Feeling the lack of control that comes from daily cravings for sugar + junk food can be huge obstacles for achieving your health goals. Did you know there is so much more to sugar cravings than just willpower or emotional eating? And without addressing the root causes, it very hard to find a peaceful healthy eating routine. Here are some underlying causes of cravings:... Nutritional deficiencies - such as chromium, magnesium, and B vitamins have an impact on your body's ability to metabolize sugar and junk food, which often leads to more cravings - especially sugary foods Overwhelm and lack of stress management tools: not having an outlet for stress, such as daily nature walks, can lead to to crave more soothing comfort foods, as sugar releases euphoric endorphins and dopamine within the nucleus and makes us feel better momentarily. This in turn leads to more stress hormones like cortisol influencing our blood sugar ups and downs. Blood sugar dysregulation: this is a term for not being able to maintain flexible blood sugar levels throughout the day - due to skipping meals, stress/anxiety, refined/sugary foods, alcohol, and not enough protein, fat, and fibre from whole foods. This keeps us stuck in a cycle of blood sugar ups and downs, which lead to more intense cravings. Not enough sleep: feeling fatigued leaves us more vulnerable to choose foods that are high in sugar, caffeine, and comfort foods for energy, which keeps us stuck in a cycle of cravings. So what's a girl to do? I've got all the tips for you in my latest blog post + a delicious and simple recipe for you. And, we are doing a 5 Day Craving Freedom Challenge starting November 16th - link below https://mailchi.mp/3874b30360d3/jnr6u1mg2nxx See more

The air quality due to the fires and smoke in BC are no joke Along with an air purifier, drinking filtered water throughout the day, and reducing foods that can contribute to mucus build up, you can tweak your diet to include foods that support your lung health Healthy mucus, which is clear and slippery, acts as a vital protective barrier to the lining of your lungs. However, when your body detects an invader, such as bacteria, dust particles and even certain foo...ds, it produces a thick, cloudy and sticky mucus. If you have a lot of this thick sticky mucus, bacteria can become trapped, creating a breeding ground for infection. Dairy, gluten containing foods, sugar, red meat and processed foods are the highest mucus-producing foods so try to limit them. Nutrients that support lung health include: Vitamin A is important for your immune system and necessary for helping to maintain the healthy lining of your respiratory passages. (sources include carrots, squash, sweet potato, kale - best eaten with a source of healthy fat) Vitamin C - Studies show that white blood cells stock up on large amounts of Vitamin C in preparing to fight infections. Therefore, supplementing with Vitamin C can help prevent and fight respiratory infections. (food sources include - bell peppers, cabbage, broccoli sprouts, kiwi - best eaten raw for higher vitamin C content) Zinc - supports your immunity to help prevent and fight viral and bacterial infections. (food sources include pumpkin and sesame seeds, lentils, chickpeas, turkey) Stay safe everyone And if you need some new recipe ideas, including these ingredients, join our upcoming 5 Day 30 Minute Dinner Challenge starting Sept 21st! Alcohol + your body I don’t think it’s talked about enough, the real impact that it has on hormones, energy, weight and mental health. And even though it may bring temporary relief, we have to recognize that alcohol, is a toxin - low cal, sugar free or not! ... Twice a year, I do a cleanse with my clients - where we eliminate food and lifestyle sources or toxins/allergens so we can really amp up the body’s natural healing ability, immune systems, and energy levels on a mental and physical level. Did you know that alcohol: Increases dopamine short term - which fires up our reward seeking pathways, leading to overindulgence Ramps up adrenaline and increases cortisol over time - leading to more anxiety and stress eating lowers melatonin, which coupled with blood sugar fluctuations leads to poor sleep, more stress and fatigue the blood sugar swings caused by alcohol can lead to more inflammation and worsen estrogen/progesterone imbalance conditions like PMS, menopausal symptoms, PCOS, etc if you’re already dealing with allergies, red wine contains histamine - which will add to your allergy burden, further increase cortisol, and bog down your liver. if you have an autoimmune condition, alcohol with further contribute to inflammation and already compromised levels of glutathione- which is needed to clear the alcohol - leading to fatigue and foggy brain So what’s a girl to do? Sometimes, we just need a good replacement for the habit of having a drink - grab your favourite wine glass and pour yourself a sparkling water with an antioxidant rich flavour like kombucha + frozen berries! If you want to drink wine, choose a low sugar / high antioxidant rich one like an #organic Pinot noir. Use natural calming herbs and lifestyle techniques like deep breathing and hanging out in nature to ground your stress and anxiety. I love lemon balm and holy basil tea - which are both adaptogen is and calming to the nerves Swipe for more drink alternative ideas

Afternoon #rituals - recenter, feel grounded and take a break to fill up your cup I used to get the 2pm crash hard, and of course I would plough through with caffeine and sugar to get my work done. That's what I now know to be 'burning the candle at both ends', which will inevitably lead to #burnout ... Now I actually take 10 minutes, whip up a frothy medicinal hot chocolate, and enjoy a nice break in the day before I continue on. This is much gentler and sustainable way to expand your energy and nurture your adrenals. I use this combo from @livenaturalnow (monk fruit + stevia) which is blood sugar friendly, natural sweetener that has no bitter aftertaste, and gives me a hint of sweetness without the crash. Monk Fruit Extract, also known as Luo Han Guo is derived from the concentrated juice of a melon-like, vine fruit native to parts of South Asia. Great replacement for high glycemic or artificial sweeteners Afternoon Chocolate Elixir with Monk Fruit 1.5 cups unsweetened vanilla oat milk 1 Tbsp raw cacao powder 1/4 tsp medicinal mushrooms (ex. Reishi) 1 scoop collagen powder (optional) 3-4 drops Organic Better Than Stevia + Monk Fruit How to make: You can warm up the milk first on stove top or milk frother, or have it cold. Mix in the rest of the ingredients. (If you're not using a milk frother, I suggest blending it in a blender) Enjoy in the afternoon to recharge! Oh hey, it's National #Organic Week in Canada! Shopping for more organic products is a great way to support sustainability, reduce the amount of harmful toxins in the environment and our bodies from pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, & Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). One of the most widely disputed herbicides is glyphosate (in Roundup) which is used on crops like corn, wheat & soy. In 2015, the WHO reclassified glyphosate as probably carcinogenic to humans, y...et it is still considered 'safe' according to Health Canada. Other issues that can arise from glyphosate include gut microbiome disruption as glyphosate attacked beneficial strains of gut bacteria like Enterococcus, Bacillus, and Lactobacillus. The resulting gut dysbiosis is linked to many health problems, like obesity, lowered immunity, autism, ADHD, Autoimmune Diseases, & IBS. Research suggests that glyphosate herbicides may also act as endocrine disruptors, chemicals that interfere with the body’s normal hormone signaling pathways. Endocrine disruptors are insidious; they wreak havoc over time at very low levels, in contrast to acute toxicity studies performed at high levels of exposure. Studies show that glyphosate interfered with estrogen & androgen receptors & also with aromatase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into estrogen. Glyphosate was also shown to induce human breast cancer cell proliferation via estrogen receptors. . Many countries around the worlds have either banned or placed restrictions on the use of glyphosate, including Austria, Mexico, India, Spain, among others.
