Anna's Perennials 22.11.2020

Cold and windy today. We lost power for almost 24 h and had no internet for 12h. I am not complaining, I am grateful that with so many outages we got our power back so fast. Newman , my dog was happy because we spent more time outside and he could hunt voles and mice. I am OK with mice but absolutely hate voles. I can see them everywhere. They love to hide under wood piles, dig holes close to yucca and make houses under the straw. 2 years ago I mulched my raspberry patch ...with a thick straw layer and created heaven for the rodents. I am planning to put lots of mouse traps there and if snow holds off I will remove all that straw and put it on the compost pile. I need a fox or two to keep all the rodents at bay. On the picture my Newman See more

Christmas is coming. We spend most of the day cutting greenery for the Christmas container. It takes a long time because we cut only a few branches from each tree. I do make Christmas containers, windows to order, at customer's location. We provide freshly cutted balsam fir, cedar, pine, birch, dogwood .....christmas ornaments, ribbons I still take orders so if you interested please message me or call 705-799-0062. You can also stop by and purchase few evergreen boughs t...o make your own Christmas containers..(by appointment only) Containers not included !! See more

We have few Japanese maple in the garden and they need protection for the winter. I also planted few dwarf evergreens and some fruit trees this year. They also need to be protected . All new woody plants will be covered for a winter. If they are in a very windy place I may cover them for coupole years. I already put stakes around my trees but wont burlap it or tarp it until soil is frozen solid. If I do it too early, rodents may make a home right under my cover. Since ther...e is lots to cover in the garden I will use tarps from building material store. They are free and can be reused few times. Have a look at great article about winterizing woody plants, it does explain the best way to do it. https://gardenmaking.com/winterizing-woody-plants/ See more

What a fabulous few days we had. Sunny, warm, simply beautiful. I am slowly catching up with weeding and putting away stock for next year. My lovely dog Newman gets long walks and short days hunting for mice. It gets dark at 5pm now. We cut down most of the perennials but grasses are still standing. Plumes are changing colors and look amazing in the sun

Fall is here. Cercidiphyllum japonicum /Katsura tree in my garden is showing beautiful colors and smells like burnt sugar. It has an attractive pyramidal form when young that will spread as it ages. In the Spring, it’s leaves emerge reddish-purple. They then change to nice blue-green color as they mature. In the Fall, they again change to a rich buttery yellow to apricot color. Besides looking attractive, the Katsura ...has this neat trick of giving off a subtle sweet smell as it turns colors in the Fall. To me it smells like caramel to others like cotton candy. zone 5 hight 40'-60' full sun We have few 3' high plants for sale . They are $25 plus tax. See more

We are having huge problems with chipmunks. They are cutting flowers of all my Black Eyed Susan and rest of sunflowers, eating leftover tulips , apples and picking mushroom. The last one I don't mind, they can have all they want because I don't like mushrooms. So out of shed comes live trap and some of the chipmunks go for a very long drive.
