Did you know that humans are born earlier in gestation than most other mammals? This is because of the size of our babies heads, compared to the size of the birth canal. Should babies spend longer in the womb, their heads would continue to grow, and risk being unable to make it through the birth canal. So evolution has come up with a solution, where we are simply born at an earlier developmental stage than other mammals. This is easy to see when you look at horses, or cows, a...s they walk shortly after birth. This extra time of development is still important, so there is a theory called The Fourth Trimester. The first three take place while the baby is in the womb, and the fourth between birth and 3 months of age. It is a time for the baby to take in information, but also have a high number of needs- including the closeness they once had in womb.
