I haven't been writing much stuff lately but I just finished an arrangement of the Dave Brubeck tune Ev'rybody's Jumpin' from Time Out. Wonderfully complex tune with a beautiful catchy melody. 4/4, 6/4, 3/4, dotted 1/4's strung together, really remarkable. Not the kind of thing I can just stick in front of the guys to sight read. Thursday night we are in the Jazz Bistro again with Colin Hunter. Leon Racine piano, Ethan Tilbury bass, James Rhodes trumpet, Braxton Hicks tenor, Paul Tarussov trombone, Marcus Ali baritone, Me drums, arranging, tempos, cutoffs. Colin Hunter: the Great American Songbook. Maybe if we sit in the break and go over this thing we could play it, but probably not.

Tonight we were supposed to do our regular show with Colin Hunter but Colin is indisposed so tonight we will be working with the pro's pro singer Mary Panacci. Mary and the band have worked together for many years, we have all kinds of unique charts and the band will get to play more of the jazz charts as well. Get better, Colin

Well, I'm off to the island airport to fly Porter to the Quebec city jazz festival. I hope I'm escaping this heat; awful.

Tomorrow night, Sunday 13th, I have a fun gi: I'm singing with Al Hirsch big band in Burlington, 7:30 to 9:00. For many years I would sing a fair amount when fronting my big band gigs but gradually did it less and less, relying on other people out front so I was tickled when Al asked me. Al was one of the people who originally encouraged me to do what I do in the early 80's. Better wear a good showbiz suit and play the part. Then on Thursday August 11 I'm in quebec City with Colin Hunter, then at the Jazz Bistro with Colin on august 18. Lots of fun.

Lots of music besides the money gigs. Yesterday we had an Octet rehearsal playing the late Fred Duligals' charts. Excellent music with Dave Caldwell alto, Kurt Lund tenor, Rob Williams bone, Bob Clegg trumpet, Don Vickery drums, Jack McFadden bass, myself on baritone. Tonight it's the concert with Mary and Kathleen. Tuesday night I'm playing lead alto with my Conn 6M in John Hoods' big band. Wednesday afternoon it's back with the baritone for Bob Cleggs' excellent big band. Thursday it's midday jazz with Pat Clemence, the Jazz Bistro at night with Colin. Sunday it's Al Hirsch big band in Burlington. There are so many people all over the city playing all this great music, it's hard to accept that as far as the "music industry" goes, we are completely irrelevant.

Richard Whitehouse piano, Dave Field bass, James Rhodes trumpet, Steve MacDonald tenor, Rob Somerville bone, Marcus Ali baritone, myself drums and charts. People always say: What do you do during the day? Well, yesterday I consulted with Steve MacDonald about the Jazz Bistro gig, wrote a chart for the wedding on Friday, (a request for the Father/Daughter dance) and practiced my tenor for awhile. Today I played some piano for an hour then I'm going to drummer Rod McBirnies house to play jazz for a couple of hours, then lots to do when I get back home. I'm getting orders for charts from seventet.com so I have to copy, tape and send them off. Thursday it's another regular jazz session at piano player Pat Clemence's house, the wedding on Friday and there you have What I Do During The Day.
