Maintaining your vehicle during COVID With your vehicle sitting around a lot more, it can cause unforeseen issues that can impact the reliability of your vehicle. So here is a list of preventative measures you can take to keep your vehicle as reliable as the day you parked it! Tires!... When a vehicle sits for a while, tires can get flat spots on them. Cold weather and improper tire pressure can play a big part in this. Although it would take longer than a month of sitting for it to happen, keeping up on your tire pressures can help out a lot! Generally there is what's known as a placard on the drivers door sill which has the factory recommended tire pressure on it or you can find it in your manual. Brakes! Rotors, when not used, can begin to rust quite quickly developing surface rust. Parking brakes when left on can actually bind to the rotors! If you know your vehicle is going to be sitting for more than 2 weeks, try not to use the parking brake or at least disengage it every so often. Battery! In time your battery will discharge its energy, possibly leaving you needing a boost from a helpful neighbor or your local MOBILE MECHANIC! One of the best things you can do is have a battery tender installed. It will charge your battery to 100% and keep it there without any risk of overcharging your battery. It also helps for those cold mornings making sure your car will start as well as prolonging the life of your battery! Pests! Pests such as mice, squirrels, and in one case a porcupine, look for suitable places to nest or look for warmth. However they can cause a lot of damage to wires, belts, hoses, and basically anything they can chew so always do routine checks just to make sure these critters haven’t done any damage. Fluids! If you plan on letting your vehicle sit for a long period of time, possibly 3 months or more, your fluids may need help! Gas can separate, putting moisture into your system, gaskets and hoses can dry out and become brittle. But hopefully our current situation won’t last that long! Simple prevention The best way to deal with the above is to drive your vehicle! Go for a good drive once a week and get everything moving and working. Vehicles are meant for driving!
